Just going off of these clips, I like the less knee versions more myself. On the fast attack it sounds it a little bit more airy, while on the slow and medium attack versions it pronounces the snare hit in a nice way. If that's the chunk, then my preference leans towards more chunky on these clips. The "more knee" versions on the other hand seem to kill the THWACK of the snare.

Just a thought, but I think if you want to capture a more smooth, less poppy attack, you might want to have a look at some ideas that Aleksey used on Marquis. It seems to involve some phase shifting and a different signal detector.

Here's the clip processed by the Marquis, granted it sounds more pumpy, but I notice 2 things that it does...

- It melts the entire sound and sorta glues it together to create a more unified sound.
- The attack is less pronounced, yet the drums still cut through.

fots, nice one, too ... but a bit too squashed for my taste ...
i mean, i like it pumping, but the main goal on a compressor to me is, how snappy can i get my drums without loosing the "breast"-region, the punch ...
then, another criteria, which goes along with the above is, how hard can i drive the compressor so that the sound still sounds "open" ...
to me the "medium attack" in the first example rubrik of daniels examples pretty much nails the criterias i mentioned ...
it's snappy, it's punchy, and you can hear the compressor support the groove, plus it doesn't sound squashed, allthough it's heavily compressed ...
that's what i like ... sorry for the esoteric description, my english lacks completely when it comes to such difficult explanations ...

that's what i don't like ... as you'd get that anyway when mastering the final mix ... i choose a little overpronounced attack in the mix, to overcome the loss of transients when mastering ...
but of course it always depends on the signal ... i mostly love smacky masters with well defined attacks, i tend to rather not like smeared transients ...
more like "paff!", not like "fluff" ...

that being said, of course it strongly depends on the musicstyle ...

if it's about compression, there's one album from thomas dolby called "aliens ate my buick" ... there's several tracks on it where one can hear how compression is applied in a very content-supporting way ...
that album to me is nevertheless one of the best produced, mixed and mastered albums of all times ...

I favor the short attack example of the third bunch of examples. I'm impressed by the punch of the kick and snare, it really hits me.

Pocket limiter nice.

Especially with knee set to high levels.

Saturation warm. Liked some of the colorings.

Amplifier swirly & intense coloring when pushed a bit. What are the 2 releases for?

Definitly 3 plugs worth using in the future.
