For me, a keyboard for anything other than piano has to be at least 61 keys. For piano purposes, it has to be 88, and weighted.

Soon I'll have a Roland A-80 (88 keys, weighted, polyphonic aftertouch) to accompany my Novation ReMOTE SL 61.

I find that 37 is an absolute minimum and as portability is also a big factor, it is all I would ever want. Of course, if you do want to play with both hands, you need more so I have a 37 key controller and a 25 key synth. It's nearly perfect.

3+2/3 octave is probably the sweet spot for most keyboard players; that would be 44 keys.

less than that and you run into problems with a lack of range for most playing, and more than that is usually mostly a luxury.

for guys who only hunt-and-peck on a mono synth, less will be fine or even preferred. for pianists, less than 88 is probably quite limiting.

I'm a crap player, but with my 49-key keyboard I often find I want that extra octave when playing with both hands, so I voted for 61.

For me 61 is minimum because I am a pianist. However, because of space I've settled with Axiom61. It's fresh out of the box. I am a novice at keyboards (NOT at computers, software and networks).

It may not be the place, but I'll ask anyway: With the board not connected I installed the drivers (updated from m-audio's site) and then connected it via USB. XP is recobnizing it. Then installed ABLETON 6. It's recognizing the board but I can't hear anything. The soundcard is a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz, 6 surround channels, GM compatible and it plays CDs and the XP sounds. However, when I play the board I can't hear a single note. Any opinions?

Thanks ahead. John.
