You might want to consider Plogue Bidule. You could put an instance of Bidule as an effect insert on the track you want to sample, then put an instance of DW within that Bidule, and connect DW's audio inputs to Bidule. This would allow you to route things as you need. I do this - it works for me.

Sounds cool, aside from the extra layer. Now how would I then 'play' DW from within Bidule, or would I then have to export the samples from that instance of DW into another one?
It is weird but it works pretty damn well. After thinking it over I realized that I do my bank creation as a completely separate step.... so I have never done anything with DirectWave (inside Bidule used for sampling) except play the sounds I was working on using DW's screen keys.

BUT.. you can also route MIDI with Bidule so I think you could play it in the normal way while it's inside that Plogue Bidule instance.

Another thing you can do is save the DirectWave soundbank out from the DW instance you're using for sampling (the one inside Bidule) and then load that bank into a different regular DirectWave instance that is in the VSTi rack. I KNOW that this will work and is probably a good and simple way to do it.

I hear you, but what I'm looking for is the immediacy of hardware samplers. I'm trying to integrate the sample-capturing, sample-editing, and sequencing portions of the process. Thanks for the suggestions though.
