Good point made earlier -- the Scarbee sets are electric :)

Post

ok, so you actually you are looking also for electric bass sounds, but maybe not the more agressive sound of type, right? I think then the black bass might realyl be the best option for you since it has these cool scripting features. however, if you do not own kontakt, it won't help you. I suggest having a look at ManyBass then or look at the other wizoo basses (I especially recommend the p-bass xxl set, either with flatwound or roundwound strings with the latter giving more overtones)

What could be better? It's very playable when you watch the videos.
Actually, the 9GB one is the electric guitar, not the bass. But the bass is still nice. Not as many articulations, but still very nice.

Hmmmm, choices.

I do have Kontakt, so that makes it nice.

As for the type of sound, it's really hard to say. I'm mostly looking for a good all round bass sample set. I do think that the acoustic one will come in handy, but I didn't even know it was there. I thought that acoustic basses sounded different than that.

I'm not the greatest at programming bass parts. The little things are what gets me. IMO, it's MUCH harder than drums, which I can actually program pretty well now. Another reason why Black Bass sounds good.

try the free version of the pettinhouse bass. it gives a good impression of the sound of the full version. and there is also a light version. however, I would pick this bass rather for music like alternative, punk, metal etc. imo it well suits these styles (but is of coursew not limited to it). if you do not want to porgramme the bass lines yourself: there is an app called broomstick bass with many bass sounds, but maybe the sounds are not so great. however, it gives you licks. and then there is the promise of jam bassist, but I guess it might still 1 year till it is released.

I want to give my opinion about bass sample libraries mentioned here.

Manytone Ultimate bass kit, Scarbee Black bass and Pettinhouse DirectBass.

Manytone Ultimate bass kit is a complete bass sample library.
Do you want Slap? Picked bass? Fingered? Muted? It has everything you need to create a bass track.
Listen to the great demo. The bass sounds very realistic especially in the solo performance.
It is very clean, crispy, I raccomend it to who is into Fusion, jazz and pop or acoustic live sound such as MTV Morissette Concert. It is also for who doesn't have lots of memory and don't want to stress the CPU.
It has many articulations and it is very cheap.

Scarbee Black bass is probably the most articulated and flexible bass sample library.
It is made by a great bass player Thomas Hansen. He knows how to create a bass sample library!
The sound is FAT, warm and punchy. It suites perfectly for music like Funky, Fusion, Disco (CHIC), Acid jazz, Rock. If you want to create a good solo or fingered fingered track or you want to add groove in your tune this is what you need.

Pettinhouse DirectBass is "just sound" as the users say.
In the music business there is a need of speed - production. Today Musicians don't want lose their time learning how to use a sample library with lots of articulations.
A sample library must be easy to use. If I want to achive a realistic bass track I prefer to call a professional bass player.
This what I think when I create a sample library, Innovation, great sound and use facility.
This is Directbass, a sample library easy to use, Direct recorded for the maximim flexibility. It fits perfectly in many type of music thanks to the extraordinary standard sound of the Yamaha TRB-5 strings bass guitar.
DirectBass is perfect for who is into , Funky, house, Disco, Pop, House, Rock, Punk.
If you are looking for a sample library that helps you to create your bass track in few step achiving a great result this is perfect for you.

My conclusions are that all of these libraries are great products. Both Ultimate Bass and Black bass are very articulated and flexible. They sounds different, one is clean the other is fat but both are perfect for creating a bass solo (not only) that sounds realistic.
Buy DirectBass in case you want to create in few step a great realistic fingered bass track fat and clean avoiding learning how to use many articulations.

Well said, Andrea!

Have you considered having someone program K2 patches for switching articulations with your libraries? I have DG 1.5 and I think it sounds great, but it would be cool to utilize the K2 scripting.

Thanks for the breakdown Andrea. It seems that over the next months I will probably purchase two bass sets: Black Bass and Pettinhouse Bass. I think the sounds are both great, albeit different.

I will say that the Black Bass demo mp3 sounds good, and I downloaded it and ran the mp3 through an amp and it made a whole new sound, as the original is DI. I believe it's a Musicman bass also, with flatwound strings. But when ran through an amp, it gets even more rock-ish, which is great.

It's a tough choice, and both are made for playing. The Black Bass gives you the ability to play all but TWO of it's articulations(of which there are over a dozen) without any keyswitching needed. All right there to be played live. I also REALLY like how you can choose in real time the speed of the slides, and you can slide from any note to any other note within an octave either way. All in real time.

With Pettinhouse, I like the options as well, but I haven't been able to inquire as much yet. But for sure I will try to pick it up at some point.

I appreciate the honest feedback though. I'm glad you didn't take the low road as a competitor and say "mine is just plain better", as you and I both know that they are all different beasts.

Cheers!

taken from audiomid...volume1
The Fender Jazz Bass was recorded in the playing styles fingered, slap and pick muted. The Fender Precision Bass was recorded in the playing styles fingered, pick and pick muted. Each playing style contains about 2,000 sound samples. All playing techniques like ghost notes, tappings, hammer-ons, 8th notes, slides slow, slides fast, pop ghost notes, pop slides, pop 8th notes etc. are also playable separately with up to 8 velocity splits per note. For the first time all basses were recorded in 2 different scales! This unique feature enables the choice of the string on which the note should be played!

All playing techniques give you the option of combining any of the basses!
Plus you get prefabricated combinations for each playing style with 8 velocity splits per note. More than 100 different samples per note!!! More than 150 FX per bass (harmonics, fret noises, slides, noises, scrapes etc).

The 24bit quality and precise editing of the samples puts this collection in the "must have" category.

www.scarbee.com also has the Slapped and Fingered collection as downloadable files. You can get the articulations you need for $40ea. The full lib is $169 and it sounds much more natural than Pure E basses. (of course that's just my opinion...)
