I see that I'm now the resurrector of this topic. I had looked at Ardour some years back, and while it looked nice, it was hardly midi capable, mostly audio. Flash forward years later, I give it another go and wow, things have definitely changed.
Here's a more general picture with separate mixer screen.
There's clip launching(been there for a bit):
Paul Davis and friends are currently working on version 9, among other things overhauling some midi work to allow for a separate screen to edit midi. Though their inline editor is definitely more doable than some others. Here's their current roadmap:
