Thanks for the reply! I don't think I'll do 24 bit any more, but this little "session" was my first time doing this and I was thinking of conserving disk space. Not any more!deastman wrote:I think the silence at the beginning is no big deal. Personally, if it bothered me, I'd just fix it on the fly in Battery. I'm generally happy with 16 bit, but I know some people are sticklers for that sort of thing. Considering that you originally captured them in 24 bit, I don't see the advantage in going higher than that. Mono is typical for drums, but stereo is fine too. As far as zero crossings go, do you mean starting or ending the sample at zero? If so, the fades should address that.
Reaper gives me the option of processing a recording as 32 bit, and so when I rendered the 5 microphones set up around the drumset down to one recording, I did as stereo 32-bit, and saved it as such as well, using the next-to-slowest algorithm, as the "extreme" algorithm was promising to take hours to mix down one 15-min recording. So since I've sliced so many samples already, I think I will probably leave them all as 32 bit stereo, and batch convert them to 16 for those who can't work with 32, which shouldn't be too many nowadays. And I think I've been doing all my recordings as 96000 so I probably need to dither them to 4800 or so? Maybe I can use R8brain for all that, I dunno.
And as for the zero crossings, yes, I was thinking of starting and ending them all at zero. But judging from the lack of any really definitive responses from anybody, I think I'll not bother with that, at least until I hear something really committed from somebody.
As for the silence at the beginning, I'm trying to leave just enough that I'm sure not to lose any of the real attack. That's it really.
