I didn't download 5.2 b/c IIRC, its main purpose was to fix Rewire problems. Is that correct, or was there more to the update? (I don't use Rewire.)
One thing was VST system link, that let you slave a VST 5.2 machine to another machine running SX.

I did download it but never installed it, not sure what else was included. AFAIK the 5.2 update is still available on the Steinberg site if anyone wants to try it.
Yes. That's a human ear, all right.

NB. Both Ableton Live & Reason have workarounds to minimise the number of Rewire channels that eat up the Cubase limit.

That's incredible, basic channel - I only found this Topic 'cos I had the "No more mixer channels" problem and was looking for a solution. I've never seen this problem before, and had no idea what was going on. Even after a reboot, my 5.2 does not now work properly - it just crashes when I try to open a song.

I'm going to try a re-install, but should I really re-install 5.1, and not 5.2? From what I've read here, that's the way to solve it. Any ideas, folks? :bang:
If you use Ableton Live and/or Reason, there is a options.txt tweak for Live. Just create options.txt file and type in:

-ReWireChannels=x

where x= number of channels you want.

I put 2 so all you get is the main output from Live mixer.

Save into the Ableton Preferences folder (in Windows Application Data folder).

Props have a 0kb rewire fix file which you put in Reason folder - restricts Reason rewire channels to 18.

Helps to free up a lot of mixer channels in VST (although I still have to disable FLS, Orion & Reaper rewire else Cubase won't even open !).

I could never get this System Link to work !

If I remember right, VST 5.2 only works as a slave in system link, you need another machine as master running Cubase SX or later.

Thanks, basic channel, but I don't use Ableton Live or Reason, so I'll try the 5.1 re-install and see what happens...

had that problem myself time ago, and not managing to make it work with old Cubase (my fault) i simply uninstalled Live...:(
now luckily its all over for me, as SX has not rewire limit to be afraid to setup other rewired appz, but isnt it a shame that for tweaking the rewire outs of a well known and awarded app like Ableton there is no damn simple button on the options page to set it up???
duh!

BTW if i own a license for SX3 i suppose i should be able to use the previous version of cubase pre SX (VST32 and such)? just for curiosity's sake if one day should i need to load some old ones made with the lent copy of archeologic VST32 i was using b4...

This version of Cubase reserves channels for rewire even when they aren't in use, so if you install Ableton Live and other rewire stuff, all the audio channels get taken up before you can do anything. I don't use rewire at all so it's no biggie.
:D :D :D Thanx, you just solved my problem. I just didn't understand why Cubase VST 5.1 run out on VSTi channels.

Dewaine wrote:Are you serious? That version of Cubase has to be 8 or more years old! No way! Is there? I have modern host that do not YET have multi-core support.... can someone else verify this? No disrespect to you cain, but I find that hard to believe....

By the way, congrats on the killer new PC :)
it's not impossible. multiple cpus are nothing new, multi-core CPU's are, but the way they are implemented inside windows may be the same for both situations - either physically 2 or 4 stepped CPUs or 2 or 4 cores.

i dont think it's nuts :)

Seeing as how I'm setting up my new PC, moving from Win2k to XP... what tweaks?
Surely there must be consensus by now...

Welcome. :) You should probably just rename the file to rewire.dll.old so that you can change it back when you need it again.

Thanks to the other people's suggestions too. Kinda wish other software gave the option to install rewire or not install. Would make it easier. FL Studio has that option. The Ableton Live 'fix' is a good one. Thx for the tip.

hey pough there are a couple of sites that give you some of the basic sytem tweaks that should not take to long . here is one i just looked up, but they all tell you to do the same tweaks . so here is one link i will look up so more tonite when i get home.

http://members.optushome.com.au/skinah/TweakXP.htm

edit : this is the one that i usually use for my tweaks.
www dot musicxp dot net --- just register and it will let you in to the tweaks , hope that helps :)

this is a bit off topic, but in cubase 5.1 is there any form of latency compensation in channels or groups? If not, is there a way to get readings as to the plugins' latency. thanks

xcomp wrote:I didn't know Steinberg was still providing support for such "old" versions of Cubase.
They don't. Transferring licenses to a USB dongle is as far as it goes. This is obviously because Syncroshat make money from the dongle.

It appears I was incorrect. VST 5 is still supported by Steinberg, but support is provided dircetly by Steinberg, rather than, as is usual, by your local distributor.

Thanks for that, Chris!
