Here's a different way of looking at it: some people like the math in music because they like the math as a thing of beauty in itself, and not as a means to an end of sounding professional.

Lots of professional musicians are big math heads (Mozart, Anthony Braxton, Aphex Twin, Herbie Hancock, Xenakis, I could go on for quite some time for sure, these just were people that came to me off the top of my head). That love of math is not necessarily related to why they're good musicians, but it's not terribly uncommon for musicians to be closet math fiends.
