I don't want to sound defensive here (you made some good points about the clicking/crackling which we'll look into) but if you're only used to software emulations what are you using as your reference to judge them against? if Tau2 doesn't sound like Rebirth that doesn't mean it sounds less or more like a 303 after all. It just means it doesn't sound like Rebirth :D

Kind regards
Dave

well you do sound defensive there.. but thats okay... you worked hard on it..

However it can be thought of in another way.. what if I DIDNT state my experience with the 303.. or even stated that I owned one? would you have taken my comments more seriously? ;) seems that you might have..

I've heard a lot of 303 through wav samples and song in the past (most overused synth in goa trance ) ... I know of the sound im thinking of and the parameters normally used to get it.. I just cant seem to get that sound out of this thing.. it sounds so round and more like taupro than anything to me...

but apparently im not the only one to hear this either.. ;)

Lovin your work Dave :)

Sounds better than a 303, and does more than acid basslines. Great synth, great sound. No contest 8)

i was just tweaking it (hehe dave, the demo limitation noise is really mortal:).

what should i say? i actually don't see anything in common with a 303 (not talking about the missing step sequencer this time). the filter sounds pretty very different, so does the envelope and glide. but hey, i can't complain - there's no statement that it should sound like a 303 :)

if you haven't got anything as simple as tau, it's definitely worth 17,50. if you already own refx tbl etc, i don't really see a need to upgrade tho.

if you're looking for a well crafted 303 emulation, go ahead - not much to see here. let's wait for other competitors to join the race.

cheers,
ronny

As I have already said, anyone who thinks Tau2 is wrong somewhere, just sample your 303, and show us the where the differences are. We'd be more than happy to make changes to the model in the next version.

If you don't have a 303 on the other hand, you maybe want to ask yourself what it is exactly that you are comparing Tau2 to. After all, we all know you can do an awful lot to muck about with a sound with a little EQ, compression, distortion and other FX. A recorded 303 is unlikely to be a totally dry 303 after all now is it?

c'mon guys - give Dave a break.

He's been busting his ass on this thing for ages and it's only been out for 3 hours!

The old Tau Bassline was good stuff - I'm sure it's only improved.

Uh isnt this supposed to be free ? I mean the last one was, its rather confusing since I always thought this was the demo freebie for the technology and then there was tau pro.

I mean I would be inclined maybe to say hmm ok, but i'll wait for Tau Pro 2 !

 do I sound tetchy? I certainly don't mean to. I just want people to know that, if they've got a point, we'll listen. However, we need to make sure we're using our time properly and listening to people who can back up the "problems" they've identified with hard fact. I'm hoping Easymode or Ronny or anyone else out there will take a minute to fire up their 303s, sample a patch where Tau2 sounds wrong, and send them to us so we can make it even better.

There's something else I'd like to say though: I've never heard or played first hand a real Fender Rhodes. I have got lovely Rhodes samples (professional CDs and amateur soundfonts and everything in between), have owned synthesisers with wonderful Rhodes patches and have played all of the physically modelled Rhodes emulations out there. They all have different qualities as musical instruments.

However, unless I'm actually sitting behind a genuine, recently serviced Rhodes will you hear me comment about the realism or lack of realism of any of these Rhodes replacements. I don't have perfect recall either so even if I HAD spent months in a studio with a real Rhodes I couldn't be sure I wasn't kidding myself if I thought I'd heard some differences between an emulated Rhodes and my memory of a real one.

As far as I am concerned you need to have the physical instrument in front of you and hooked up through the same monitoring system in order to formulate a valid opinion about the quality of a digital emulation. Just my 2 cents.
Uh isnt this supposed to be free ?
You can still get the original Tau for free for a short time more if you download the Muon collection, but it will be deleted from the catalogue shortly. Given that Tau2 is so much better and at a price everyone can afford, I'm confident Tau1 won't be missed.

[EDIT]
please note - i was typing this as dave muon replied
[/EDIT]

as smart said - give the guy a break !!!

all the work thats gone into tau2 and it only costs a tenner [uk] !?!

and you people still complain !!!

i ordered it straight away [didnt dl the demo] on the muon reputation and the opinion of someone who knows acid basslines [lo dave] rather than people who THINK they know what a 303 sounds like

i DONT want a 303 clone [although im sure given the work muon have put into this it sounds AT LEAST as much like a 303 as any vsti CURRENTLY out there]

i DO want a powerful bass synth with a distinctive sound and i DO think my ten british pounds has just secured me that

if the tau2 technology finds its way into a future tau pro update then all well and good cos i have that too

thanks dave muon !!!

slainte :P rob

Dave

Forgive me if this has been answered already but what would Tau 2 give me over and above my Tau Pro ?

precisely!! There are at least 2 other 303 clones in the works.. 8)

The tau2 sounds (to me) like a great bassline synth.. but still not what I had expected..

Tau Pro is going to be rebranded later on this year (and updated) to remove the confusion. Tau 2 is a no-frills analogue emulation. Tau Pro is a hybrid two-oscillator bass/lead synth with nice simple controls, some quirky features and a built-in-FX unit. I can see a Tau Pro owner finding a good home for a Tau2.
There are at least 2 other 303 clones in the works
...and I hope the authors have got their flameproof suits on too. It's a dirty job but somebody's got to do it :D

Kind regards
Dave
