The day before yesterday it changed again. This time a new ID. Sent IK Multimedia an email about it as we would monitor it over the coming month. Haven't heard back and so I had to go hunting for gear to put my guitar through as I had a gig last night and was unable to use the Amplitube gear.

That does it! I'm switching to Guitar Rig as I have that as well.

500 Euros down the drain. Thanks IK.

This is simply inexcusable in my opinion. If that happens, are we in a position to demand money back, as the product refuses to work?

That would surely put crappy protection out (edit: or the companies that use it).

I don't get it, IK's stuff is cracked the very day it comes out and the legit users get f..ed for it...

grr...

(luckily it hasn't happened for me...yet...but I'll need to reinstall my system sometime this year and I can tell you I'm not looking forward to it)

You make it sound as if I say it is okay... I am not okay with that.

It's what I am trying to do. I am in talks with someone from Support, and he seems to really want to help. I have 2 activations left, so I sacrificed one so he can find out what the f*** is going on. If that one goes down the drain as well (what I expect), then it is completely bye bye from my side. I've changed to using Guitar Rig as my guitar processor instead of my patches through X-Gear as that one is stable.

That has always been the standard, and always will. Remember when you were a kid? One kid in class was making a mess and the whole class got punished for it. Same deal here, someone steals the program and the legit users are punished.

Windows? Or Mac? From careful analysis I think the program was written for Windows and "badly" ported to Mac. What do I base that on? Simple:
- the File menu in OSX has a Quit item. No OSX program has that;
- the program has an Uninstall routine that is not installed. This is typical behavior in Windows, but in OSX it is normal to create a subdirectory under /Applications and put everythin in there;
- Your patches are written to the big list of other patches that is shown. You can only write if you are Admin. Isn't that standard operating mode in Windows; running as Admin? I had to change the permissions to the directory so everyone can write before I could save my patches. Which also shows I do not run as Admin on a daily basis.

I think Amplitube will run a hell of a lot better in Windows than what I've seen on OSX.

Until the Amplitube suite has proven itself to be stable, I am not going to use it professionally. I am willing to find out what is going on, but I stick to Guitar Rig until I am satisfied.

I would think that the IKMM Support guy would reset the Authorisations on your Account so you would be OK.

Probably... But I'd be wondering when the next time is that it goes belly-up. So, if it goes down again, that would be the end-all for me.

I first want to see it working for a half year without any problem before I will entertain thoughts of using it for real.

Well apparently there is a problem with IK Multimedia changing digital ID's when you either upgrade to OS X 10.5.7 or Quicktime. Yesterday I noticed Sampletank telling me that I need to re-authorize and it appears my digital ID has magically changed without any changes to hardware. I contacted support and Jason quickly acknowledged the problem and upped my authorization count (since I was out of authorizations).

So today I tried instantiating Amplitube and I get the same problem but now it appears that the IK Multimedia site is completely down. Anyone else experience this?

jesus, what a crappy copy protection ....

Just updated to 10.5.7 and did the QuickTime update - SampleTank comes up without needing reauth. The main site seems unreachable but I didn't try to authorize so not sure if that's down too

lost lots of auths on my powermac.
dont have the problem with intel machine. not yet at least.i am probably out of authorizations.

Caveat: I'm a PC user.

I've never had a problem with any of my IK software (ST2XL, SS2, Philharmonik, Samplemoog, CSR, T-Racks and Ampeg Uno) losing authorization unexpectedly.

IIRC, one of the reasons (besides customer complaints) was that the Syncrosoft dongle was not compatible with Receptor.

Let me get this out of the way first, I have no clue what makes the IDs change; I just know it happens.

Now my experiences. I've updated my iMac to 10.5.7 and the first time I start up X-Gear I get bugged with the notification. I've just updated iTunes and therefore Quicktime, I did not get the note. On the other hand I also updated my MacBook Pro to 10.5.7 and that didn't make X-Gear throw a hissy fit about IDs. I haven't updated iTunes/Quicktime yet, but seeing that the OS X update didn't kill X-Gear and the Quicktime didn't on the iMac I doubt it will be something as simple as that. It may be connected though, but the update in itself. Nah, don't think so.

@Dougsyo: the reason for that is pretty simple I think. By looking at certain parts of the program (like the File menu) I draw the conclusion that the Amplitube suite has been created for Windows. And then was ported to OS X. This would make it possible that copy protections work on Windows, but not on OS X.

Just thinking out loud...

I'm gettting the same problem, OS X 10.5.7, with Ableton Live.

I upgraded ableton to version 8 ( 8.0.3 ), It asked for a new authroization. I was able to reauthorize XGear, but Amplitube 2, SVX Uno, TRacks now all are asking for authorization, and now CRASH LIVE when I am trying to get the authorization from the web site...

I love the sound of IK stuff, but I've about had it with this..

That's the biggest problem isn't it? I bought the stuff because I liked the sounds (still do). But I think it isn't worth the hassle because of the stability issues. To find out what the **** is going on I play around with it on my iMac, but as far as bands and concerts are concerned it is Guitar Rig.

As I just said, I play around with it on the iMac and so I did yesterday. Messed with the X-Gear stuff for some two hours and then was reminded of another stability issue that goes around on the net. All of a sudden I got static, white noise instead of the carefully crafted cacophony I expected. Also something that has to be adressed before it is roadworthy! I can't be on stage and all of a sudden get a case of the white noise! I won't have any fans left (that is if I have them already). For the rest I will be kicked out of the band as well as my gear is unreliable. So... A Big NO until that has been settled.

Back to the story... I had a PM that there was a new version of X-Gear which I had downloaded. I don't run as Admin, so login as Admin, raise my normal power, relogin as me, install X-Gear, relogin as Admin, kick me down, get back to me (sometimes I wonder about Multiple Personality Disorder!). Start up X-Gear, error! VPA host rejected. Saw that before, so do the power game again and uninstall X-Gear, reinstall X-Gear, do the power game again, start X-Gear. Purrfect! All in working order.

Through RSS feeds I had seen that Apple had created a new batch of updates, so I thought while I was playing Admin I might as well do the update. Done. Restart, and go to watch the tv. after an hour or so I had the brilliant idea of checking if X-Gear still lived. So start up X-Gear after the updates... And guess what? "Your trial period is over!" NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

Here we go again... Luckily it reverted to the original ID that I had used when I installed the gear the first time. How is it possible that these ID changes which are hardware based still revert to the original. Does the program really think I yank stuff out of the iMac and plug it back in a few weeks later?

Oh well... Another email to IK M... We'll notice.
