Break away from using notes from just one scale, unless you just want simple, and boring usually IMO...

and include the altered scales...

and like they always say: 'don't bore us get to the chorus!'.

and when you have techniques for changing it up, the verse, chorus, and key come naturally and just fall into place...

that's what I'm guessing anyway
