I Love this idea about the "SFXR"!
Maybe we should use this along with a plugin capable of these classic 8bit sounds!
I will participate probably. :)

Well, I'll go with the flow! .... feel free everyone to apply some influence!

oh, sfxr has a Mac ported version as well.

Would it help if I compiled a list of all the suggestions since the first comp? ( yeah, go on, post that pic of the bear sh!tting in the woods! :hihi: )

is there a problem?
No ! no problem whatsoever but I was reading the first post to find out when the voting ended, and could not find a date... thats all !

I'm between tattiemannie and MadPsyance, not sure what to vote... :?
I'll vote for MadPsyance if I see his track not getting much support. :D
"Not Dead" is definately one of the most addictive tracks I have heard this year, though.
MP, please come to Greece! :P
Greece? Whoah! I'm just a dumb American(I'm literally moments away from eating a cheeseburger and fries!), the furthest I've ever gone is Canada and I live on the freakin' border! Thanks for your appreciation of Not Dead...the pop/rock song structure gets little respect in the OSC's it seems.

Post

I dunno MP, I dont tend to think of your stuff as pop/rock anyway ... in fact, when you listen to stuff 'as is' with no expectation, you can hear it detached from the writers intention sometimes.

...maybe if genealex listens to my track again with the knowledge that I earn the bulk of my living playing bouzouki, and try and imagine what it would sound like if there was a zook where a Crystal sound or two had to be, then he may even be tempted to pay for my flight!! :hihi:

Post

I just had to google bouzouki and zook..still not sure what a zook is.
I envy anyone who manages to make money off of their music, especially enough to live off of. Much respect, sir!

As far as my tracks, I think the structure is very pop/rock, there's intro,verse,chorus,bridge..all that, just cause I don't know anything else..it's what I grew up on. The structure of most electronic music just goes way over my head at this point. I think for the next OSC I will try something new.

P.S. Tattie: I think a game-sound synth would be perfect for your style! Look forward to hearing it if that's the case.

I have to say that it's difficult for me to single out just one track to vote for! Seriously, I think you could make a case for any one, depending on your criteria. The whole collection makes for a spiffy little album!

Anyway, I cast my vote for Yeager's "Peruvian Nightmare" because of the Angelo Badalamenti-like pad part, the warm, plucky bass and the tasteful percussion. I don't know, it just hits me in the right spot.

From Tattiemannie's slick magic carpet ride to really staggering productions from Jon Boyd and MadPsyance, K-Bee's stuttering rhythms, Gamma-UT's disturbing melody, and Kraftwerk-like sounds from MajorBloodnok and Mouxbar...IT"S ALL GOOD!

Nice work, everyone!

"google bouzouki"?!
How dare you mr Psyance? :-o :P

tattie, "Blame it on the Bogie" is the new Not Dead!
MP, this is the bouzouki :P :

About the next OSC, I was thinking if it would be possible to make a competition where we will use fixed effects and plugins (for example SFXR + [insert 8bit sounding plugin], a free EQ, a free reverb, and so on, and). This way the results will come from the value of the pieces themselves rather than the personal tastes of the voter.
It would be fun for me to participate in a competition where everyone used exactly what I used.

I've seen them plenty of times but didn't know what they were called. :dog:

Hi Tattie,

The idea of the 8 bit OSC sounds fun. It will end up as an album of bonkers chip tunes 8)

Perhaps there is something to running a "set" of free VST's, the point is appreciated...

I'll just comment that as a Fruity user, stuff like EQ is built into the DAW. As I'm on a humble 2800 Athlon, this is important as any additional VST would just increase processor drain in an already tight set up.

I know there are ways around this but you've also heard my views on leaving performances live in the "spirit" of the competition.

Just my 'hapennys worth. If we can keep to the current rules of free VST's that would be fine by me.

Kind regards,
Mouxbar

After playing with SFXR for twenty minutes I'll just add that it's a super little gizmo and well worth having a look at.

Sorry going a bit off topic from the voting thread

Cheers,

Yeah slugfest, I also use FL, so for me it is simply a case of creating samples with sfxr and loading them into FLs sampler ... which has a lot of options to reshape etc. ... but maybe thats an unfair advantage already.
So yeah genealex, I would be all for having a fixed set of tools .... theres time to discuss now, so if there is a maintained interest in sfxr, and a designated sampler, and designated fx, then lets thrash it out!

I have built a sample player plug ( Wav-Sticine ), and its freeware! I would love to use it, but then again, it wont work on a mac, so kinda defeats the purpose using sfxr/cfxr.

Then again, if there is no representation in this discussion from mac users, then .....

Post

Oh, couple of things .... you're not off topic slugfest, yeah its a voting thread, but this is the time we need to throw input to the next comp!! :)

... and MadPsyance, 'zook' is my silly word for a bouzouki! :hihi:

.... right ... back to the voting!

heres my notes ....

Mouxbar ... Really feel like being in a 'space' .... Evocative use of sounds. The economy of sounds allows more access to their individual character. A bit of jungle, straying onto Carribean beach, but watch out for that shark!!

K-Bee ... this one sounds like its been smashed to pieces and stuck back together with no visible scarring! despite the limited number of sounds used, it constantly demands attention. Nice piano!

Jon ... rich slurpy pads, lots of air, water and gravel .. good use of space .... a lovely composition and good variety of quality sounds.

MadPsyance ... good flow of sounds and phrases ... a nice flavour of Kraftwerk in there. Love the variety in the use of the bass which brings elements of different styles into the track.

Yeager ... quality sounds! That bass sounds so real! From the inviting warm pad at the start, this is a track I can live in! .... Yeager, although there's enough in the mix to bond with, I feel theres a lot of space/scope for this one to anywhere you want to take it.... and now you can use any synth you want :)

Gamma-UT... wow! this track has its own agenda! Solid and interesting percussion sounds. A brooding quality to the track, and an unusual mix of sounds. Like how the dominant sound 'shapeshifts', denying categorisation, and playing a variety of roles in the composition.

MajorBloodnok .... I find this one so immediately engaging! Kraftwerkish yes, but actually, the combination of repetitive of bass and the fairly unstructured melody is more evocative of Public Image Ltd's 'Metal
Box' .... this is definitely my favourite track, but I dont know if it gets the vote .... I'll need to review my criteria!

Post

OK, it was tough, but I've cast my vote .... and actually feel like I've rejected 6 rather than chosen 1!

But Yeager gets my vote. The individual sounds on Peruvian Nightmare are excellent, and sit together beautifully in the composition. All of the sounds have a familiar 'realness' to them, and well, theres just a welcoming, warm vibe about the track, and there is certainly a 'wow! ..all that from one synth?' factor in there.
