Great stuff, J.
You definitely have your lab hat on for this one. It tugs equally at my sense of rhythmic adventure and my desire to hear new drum/perc sounds. Very attractive sound design and 'squiggery'.
The process you have set up here, while it might be (for you, as well) the most prominent/intriguing aspect of this creation, somewhat boggles my imagination. A video of this process would be like when I was shown by a friend how to make my first power chord on a guitar many years ago - very empowering, enlightening, and a little frightening.

It's always awesome to hear some new 3am, period. (slams down the mic and walks off stage)

yeah, I do know.

Exalting process, to me, is not dichotomous from being results oriented. It's a matter of points on a continuum.

Having 'policies'... 'my policies are correct'. can get in the way of the quality of your result, as it interferes with the process trying to fulfill a plan. Now, maybe somebody with a more muscular brain can do this better than I. A matter of painting by numbers that is still creative, it kind of amounts to.

The analogy I've been using is this: screenwriting. You cannot labor dialog. It's going to tell on you. That's an absolutist statement, but I believe it to be True. What you do is come up with a backstory for every character that's going to do any talking. You make them palpable, to where you're moved by their predicament, their history.

Then they talk to each other according to the intersection of their particular needs, which tend to conflict and/or mesh.

So, what you did here was the work in Reaktor, and the modular whatchamacallit, you gave them a kind of personality. And you hooked them up 'randomly', and they did the thing, better than you might really have had enough 'control' to 'program'. It has to be a synergistic enterprise. More than sums of parts. Over-planning can be too cognizant of parts AS IF they are 'the whole'.

Now, to contrast this in order to further support the point, I have that Heresy song. It's a fvcking blueprint, then a construction project. It has to be, to support another sort of idea which is, dammit what's the word... anway, it's for a lyric. It has another function to support, it's like saying a commercial is a work of art, I can't think of the words.

All I can do is decorate it, like a building and make the structure sound. It's not much, in terms of "art".
It "has walls", so it's "a building".

Took me all of two days to get it in working order. Now I just need to clean it up and find a case for it. It was a surprisingly easy project. I paid a little extra for Todd to do the SMT stuff for me, I think that made a big difference. A highly recommended project. Very satisfying results. :)

Agreed. :)

I feel like my brain is being jacked. Somehow, and I mean, really somehow, I can find a beat behind this, which is amazing.

Really cool and original sound design.

No doubt, most of it will sync up nicely to a 96BPM tempo. There are some rhythmic divergences (mainly due to how the Tyme Sefari works) but I tried to maintain a connection to the grid. :)

@ Jazzy: the word I'd use is "demystifying" :hihi:

I'm glad to hear some new 3am as well. :)

Hi Justin.
Listening to the track I had a thought...no really!
Have you ever composed with commercial cartoon samples?
I have a catalog with all the Jetson's and Flinstone samples...to name a few.
If you have done something before, i'd love to hear it, if not, and I send you a few select samples, would you be keen on making something?
....................Don`t blame me for 'The Roots', I just live here. :x

justin3am wrote:How? Um, difficult to answer. I need to finish a video some time. Basically, I've got patterns that trigger the random percussion sounds coming from Bazille, that audio is fed to my modular where the Tyme Sefari samples and mangles that audio via control voltage generated by the Woggle Bug (which is clocked to the master tempo). That audio is sent to the "Where's the party at?" which I use to sample, re-sequence and mangle some more (operation of WTPA? is also sequenced by Numerology). Finally I used an ensemble I built in Reaktor to do most of the fine tuned granular stuff.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. :)
I am exceedingly curious regarding this process.

so you're using the alpha version of this Bazille (kind of bleeding edge, what - which I just downloaded)? On what OS, & was it stable thruout?

OSX 10.5.7 in Ablton Live 8.0.4. I'm using practically the same computer you are, not now but when I make noise. It's stable, some features haven't been implemented but no crashes or anything like that.

Here is the patch if you wanna check it out...

It's the kind of thing that will generate a new sound every time you hit a key. The composition is mainly in the processing though, because of how I'm using the hardware samplers like sequenced granular delays.

What Urs calls an alpha could almost be called a release candidate if it weren't for the missing features.

Of course! You know me and my affinity for So Cal Beaches. :)

I've recently taken up surfing again. Haven't done it since High School. I heard they were having 25' waves in Huntington a few weeks ago! :-o That is a bit to much for me and my long board, though.
