For now I've taken the liberty to start a thread... kind of spammish, but what the fu**, it's my responsibility only anyway

fu** this is harder then I thought, I like a lot of the tracks, but all for different reasons.
Some for the musicality, others for the atmosphere, and some for the brilliant sounds they use.
I'm not ready to choose yet !
Just a thought : would you take the time to listen to these tracks if you were not participating in the challenge ?
I, myself... I don't know

Well said, I'm mad enough to always listen to unknown artists in search of a "good find". Bugger me, it's like finding needles in haystacks sometimesYeager wrote: Just a thought : would you take the time to listen to these tracks if you were not participating in the challenge ?
The hit rate here though is pretty good. Certainly two and probably three tracks here that would get permanently placed in my mp3 vaults... even in their current Felix only mix state.
I think your question would be better put - Do people listen to music that they've never heard of?
Sadly, no, unless it is served up on a plate for them by a commercial radio station (or the jolly old BBC in the UK). People are, sadly, lazy.
I remember Britney Spears breaking in the UK. You know who was the main culprit? Terry Wogan on the BBC Radio 2 breakfast show - our biggest radio audience appealing to MOR commuters. Argh
A bit of a fire lit anway Tattie

Thats an interesting if confrontational question Yeager! ... I tend to listen to a lot of music on a daily/weekly basis, but in different ways ....
...passively, like via the radio,
...semi passively, as in I actively choose a cd or a collection of tracks to listen to while I do the dishes/hang up the washing etc,
...exploratory, having a listen to tracks, or bit and pieces by artists who come to my attention by various means, or when surfing.
...Actively ...this is always harder to find the time for. As well as this comp, I do reviews here and there, and in the case of active listening, you not only have to make time, but you also have to approach the task mentally and emotionally freed up.... ie. exactly what you require when writing/recording/mixing your own tracks, or stuff you get paid to do for others.
I would think, that in addition to those who vote/review/comment, there are a fair number of folks listen to the comp tracks on a less active basis. This is supported to some extent by the download figures in the hosting file.
Still, no harm in bumping the voting threads .... gotta make the most of that 7 day window!

OK, so while I listen to those tracks again, ( and hope to find a way to cast a vote! ) I will be on hand to stir up discussion re our next featured synth!
I dont feel there's any strong swing towards any particular synth at this point, so any good suggestion will be in a fairly strong position.

rightee-ho .. I've listened to the whole lot again, I've made notes, I've read them over, and I've come to a conclusion!
.... They're all fkn brilliant!!!
Normally at this point, I ask myself which track above all do I want to hear again? ... and normally, there is one which I want to click on.... ( however this is not usually the one which ends up with my vote ) ... but, I have 5! ... or 6 if I think about it a bit more, ( and possibly 10 if I continue that thought process
)
The only hint I can give right now about where I'm gonna vote is that there are 3, which have so far not scored a single vote, but which demonstrate for me, not only the artists' skill, and approach to the task, but clearly hold Felix up as a damn nice synth!
I implore the mods to create a more flexible poll arrangement whereby more than one vote, or a heirarchy of scores can be applied to more than one entry for comps such as this one which has such a large number of submissions.
Its hard enough when there are 6 to 8 entries, but 19??
It would be nice if I could give 5 marks to my fave, 3 to my second, and 2 or 3 x 1 mark for the 'very nearlies' .... or maybe I just have to view the present situation as part of the one synth 'challenge'
Anyway, I have to chicken out and defer my vote 'til tomorrow
....when hopefully I will also have a brief review to offer each track.

Yeah, multiple vote would be nice indeed, kind of like the Eurosong contest (with better music)

They do this for the monthly Music Cafe contests. It's more flexible but more work for the competition organiser (or whoever gets the job of totting up) because the votes all have to be collated manually.
You also run the risk of getting fewer votes as it takes a while to score them individually.

Yeah Gamma, it would be a bit more work, but I wouldn't mind doing the counting if thats how we want to do it.
We could adapt it according to the number of entries ... like, the one vote poll is fine for up to around 6/7 entries, but above that, it would be nice to add a bit of flexibility .... be nice if it could be done automatically though
Any more synth suggestions??
Should I post a list again?

Actually, I've used it a lot, for the kind of thing I do now and then (I mean here http://www.macvibes.com/spaceadventures/ )it wouldn't be a challenge at alltattiemannie wrote: . how about Cosmogirl 2? ... challenge or what?![]()

I take your point Mac.... if you create a piece of music in the style of the Space Adventures stuff, then it wouldn't be a challenge to use CG2. But then again, another synth might suit someone elses musical style, and wouldn't be a challenge for them, but quite challenging for others.
This is inevitable ...but then there is the next comp, and the next synth ... and the level of challenge will change .... some will find it harder, others easier
It really depends on what you see as 'the challenge'.
Simply creating a track with one synth is not a huge challenge at all! ... You can work within a synths apparent limitations and create something at least musical... ( depending on how you wish to define music
)
...but to create a relatively uncompromised piece, in the style of your choosing, out of one synth, even a very capable synth is certainly a challenge.
Add to that the challenge of presenting/showcasing a wide range of functional/quality/unique sounds within a track, then it is difficult to name a synth which would NOT present a challenge.
I'm not gonna push Cosmogirl 2, but it certainly has limitations, and would be challenging to most
I think you will find in every comp to date, there is a mixture of tracks which challenge the limits of the chosen synth, and tracks which are more focussed/based on what the synth does best. But both ends of the scale are equally valid in terms of showcasing a synths strengths/weaknesses/character.
So I think it's more important to find a good candidate or two for the next comp that everyone can use .... and we can balance out their ease of use perhaps with fx limitations??
