Nope.

Those sounds contain the raw samples and THAT'S what the ROMpler manufacturers want to protect. The chap could have spent every day for the last two years making his own program creations up and they could be absolutely breathtaking but without permission from the manufacturer(s), he is (technically) not allowed to re-distribute them (neither is he allowed to use their company or product or brand name or image for a number of legal reasons).

The analogue synth stuff is fine though, even sampling the factory presets (which is maybe unscrupulous but not - technically - illegal). The use of company/brand names/images is borderline but probably ok given the products are long discontinued.

I actually bought an analogue set out of curiosity. They're ok. Loops are quite obvious (and a lot click and pop) but they are topped and tailed well with no dead space. The sounds themselves are ok and probably quite usable but lack extensive multi-samplage for a lot of them (one sample per octave for only four octaves). The way they are organised (or not!) is the weakest part - I wouldn't want to sort them out into usable instruments!

Not for me to judge on the basis of one sample set though. Not for me to comment on the provenance of the samples either - they SEEM to be kosher but I don't know. As always, I find it odd that they have access to such a huge assortment of truly classic synths (EMS Synthi-A, ARP2600, Matrix 12, Synclavier?!!!) and are almost giving them away? Then again, they are only selling the samples - you have to do all the work to make them even remotely playable.

A bit of a palaver downloading them after purchase as well!

Out of curiosity, I bought another set.

I am not even sure the samples are of the synth they are alleged to come from. I bought the Synthi-A because that's something I have marked down as a future project of mine - I was curious to know what theirs offered.

I am pretty damned sure that the samples are not of a Synthi-A, just some generic synth sounds. I know the EMS stuff very well (I cut my teeth on them 35 (!!!!) years ago and am friends with the designer) and those samples don't sound like a Synthi! Also, the Synthi is famed for its weird-shit sci-fi, space effects - there's not one of those in the collection! You'd think there would be ... at least a few!

Draw your own conclusions!

Thanks for your effort. The sets for Prophet 5, Jupiter 6 / 8, CS-80 and OB-X sound quite real to me but i don't have as much experience as you to be sure. The only strange thing is that the Prophet and CS-80 sets don't contain the famous brass sounds but a few not so nice ones and several awesome synth strings and some pads. Maybe more brass sounds are in the Prophet 10 set. On the other side the Jupiter and OB-X brasses are very nice. The CS-80 set seems to contain the famous Blade Runner lead sound.

BTW i bought some of your sample sets from Hollow Sun and those are really nice. Currently ia am waiting for the Novachord set...

i, unfortunately, did so too! sounds to me like soft-synth territory! i've owned an AKS for over 8 years and i do know the sounds and it's spectral quirks.
also, concerning the CS80.... what can i say.. either this set has absolutely nothing to do with the aforementioned beast, or the sound-designer (?) is absolutely dreadful at it !

now.. who wants to talk about the "Kraftwerk" pack ?

How about drum synths ? There are lot of free / commercial libraries with sampled sounds from various Drum Synths hardware. Or some old pianos , church organs ? YOu can't create "custom presets", every sound is a "factory" sound. How this can be legal ?

I'm not sure if we arent getting too paranoid... Sampled wav is nowhere near compared to real hardware. There;s also plenty of work required (preparing multisamples, creating loops) etc. I'm not sure if sampling 30 year old hardware is illegal.

Basically i agree with you i was getting a bit nervous by the reactions of the people at this forum and some of them are professionals (e.g. Hollowsun) so they should know more than me.
At least for the analog synths those samples should be no problem, especially for the ones with no storage memory. I am not sure about samples from workstations but i didn't check them so far so i don't really know if they contain factory sounds.

BTW from the sets for analog synths which i already purchased i have no reason to believe that they are fakes but like i already told i don't know all the original synths "personally".

@DNA: The sample set of the Prophet 10 seems to contain some more Prophet brasses.

I purchased the Synclavier sample set which is only available at the wildstyle24 site. Besides a huge amount of other nice sounds (each sound with 10 to over 20 samples) it contains the famous choir lead sound which Genesis used in the song "Mama". Very nice, especially with some chorus added !!

thanks for the tip Ingonator! the Synclavier collection is indeed worth it ! i'm in the middle of key-mapping and preparing the samples in K4 and the formant and metallic samples alone are worth the fee !
