Oh really? Which commercial amp sims are as you say "just simple waveshapers + fx" ?Jafo wrote:BTE Juicy 77 or Cortex with AeternusEternus' Nebula cab sims, or JCM 900 -- unlike most ampsims, which are just simple waveshapers + fx
Btw, my preference is for the softube vintage amp room, and I combine that with external vst's when i need special fx (audio damage, soundtoys etc...)
Works for me...

That's the way I'm doing it right now.futurefields wrote: Btw, my preference is for the softube vintage amp room, and I combine that with external vst's when i need special fx (audio damage, soundtoys etc...)

Basically it's VAR with mokafix's plugins in case I need more distortion. Although I sometimes use Revalver, mostly for less edgy high-gain stuff.

+1 for Savihost here. I'm using it too for quick access at home (so don't take it as an official Magix proposal). Works fine, although it's already got too many buttons and too much functionality for my taste. At least when it comes to a simple plugin wrapper/host. Otherwise one could also use the Samplitude 11 Siver (Win) that comes with Vandal (boxed).Jafo wrote:Savihost if you're running Windows; I'm sure the Mac people have a workalike.Franzel wrote:Vandal comes as a VST or AU plugin, there's no standalone version as far as I know.
It's true, we don't have a real 'standalone' version at the moment, but we considered that long ago. It's just a matter of resources, as it needs to be platform-independent, and we currently got nothing here to pull out the drawer. But I'll keep an an eye on that topic, for sure.

OKKO Twin Sonic into an Emery Sound Microbaby
oh wait that's neglecting the sim part...... mmmm ....
anyway - I'm so much happier this way... and putting a ZOOM H2 in front of the speaker is fast enough and results in a great and yet unique (as in "I'm the only one who sounds like that" not as in "oh that sounds strange let's all it unique")
I'm sure an SM57 would sound good as well I didn't bother to really mic it up yet though....

SIMPLE VSTS !!!
Say what? Yeah, I tried the Tumult one, and it ROCKS! Literally. This is the FIRST time an amp sim gives me a ROCK sound (has 2 eq, one pre amp, one after). This is the FIRST amp sim that has made my VERY cheap guitar sound good. I've tried everything else (Vandal might be my second choice, after that, nothing).
I can't say enough that using these with Cabinet or the Speakers from Speakerphone (20 amp cabinets or so with mic variations) sound the best to me. No other IRs sound better to me.
At least you ought to give yourself the benefit of the doubt and try them (SIMPLE VSTS has now like 10 or more different guitar amp sims-effects!!!)

I noticed on the Peavey forum that Revalver is sending out a beta update, this is good to see that they are still moving with this excellent product. I would like to try the Vandal as a demo, but, prefer standalone options. Is there a demo of this? Seems to be quite a few who like it. Can't really make a call until I have tried it myself.

Why? Because there are so many posts suggesting $300+ amp sims and I know guitar players don't make that much.

Wait, are you saying you're using Speakerphone for your cabs? I've always considered getting this but I couldn't get past the no demo and I never got a clear idea of if it added latency. I'd only want it it didn't add any latency. I liked Cabinet, though I thought the IRs sounded a little too bright. I'd love to hear your opinion about using Speakerphone post amp sim.sightlessness wrote: I can't say enough that using these with Cabinet or the Speakers from Speakerphone (20 amp cabinets or so with mic variations) sound the best to me. Hink wrote:while I agree with you (but I like all my sims) I have one problem that I'm curious about how you get around it, latency. I can play a sim in stand alone or a very small project without an issue but if the project gets large I have to increase my buffers. That's why I might find a tone I like playing live through a sim I still only use it for re-amping and for recording tracks I use my PODs so I can take advantage of direct monitor.zerocrossing wrote:Well, I guess it'll be no surprise to people here that I'm basically using only AT3 at this point. I just think it sounds gorgeous. Recently I thought I might get a little low watt tube amp... but that's on the back burner. I just don't feel that much of an urge to have hardware as I do with analog synths. I wish IK Multimedia would take what they know about modeling and bring it to the VA software world.
While it's true I'm likely to find better sounds in sims than from my outdated PODs I still can find tones that are fine for a reference amp, and let's face it...AT3 can be a cpu hog (and I have a robust machine).
So how do you get around the latency?
I tend to work kind of weird though where I'm constantly "rendering" tracks using an audio looper. You should check it out, it's a super fun way to work.
