Oh, this was like watching a bad episode of Miami Vice back in the day. What am I saying? They were all bad :P

I really wanted someone to take one of these infernal digi-boxes and give it a real 2010 "nu feel". Just like they've done with analogue... ah well. Back to jazz funk then

So, not my cup of tea, however sterling efforts all round with some stand out entries. I've awarded the top four all equal marks as I don't think it would be fair for me to pick favourites in a genre I really don't get :help:

Six points each to:

Look Ma, No Ensoniqs - K Bee
The Future is Digital - Monopoli
Deja Vu - Steplton
Running - Mulperri

Hoping to do something with the Noisemaker OSC but it doesn't suit computer keyboard users as it pinches DAW focus as soon as you turn a knob. So it's a maybe for the moment.

Best of luck all!

Forgive the question, I'm a bit out of touch with everything: I have to write down my votes only here, right?

Anyway:

Bwwd-Suspense: 8 points (wonderful, pure 80's bliss with an edge)

Running-Mulperi: 8 points (beautiful, great spacesynth track)

StrangledByStrings-Oscxix-Yeager: 5 points (damn viking)

24.59pmAndAllIsWell-Tattiemannie: 3 points (Tattiemadness)

Yes, written here only. Thx.

Here's my verdict:

3 points - BWWd - Suspense
- a bit samey maybe but it's a modal track. I like it and it's one of the many good 80s tracks in this osc. How on earth did you do that breathing sound throughout?? Sounds like real breathing to me! :-o

5 points - The Future is Digital - Monopoli.
80s car chase 1985 style is my initial thought! What's not to love then. Nicely executed too. the only thing I don't like is a particular lead sound playing around the 1,45 mark. doesn't fit the rest imo. Good try at getting the SQ8L sound like a d-50 too :D

8 points
Steplon - Deja Vu

This is just hilarious!!
It reminds me of a Roland U-20 Demo from way back when I was a kid dreaming about owning a synth! Pure nostalgia for me, love the solos intervening at the 1.40 mark. Old demos use to do that showing off the presets :hihi:

10 points - Mulperi - Running

Awesome take at the italo/Hi-NRG style complete with octave bass line and just the right synth stabs in the right connection. This really sounds like 1985 and is by far the most accomplished take on the era I've heard in a long time.
Fantastic job!!! This deserves a real 12" vinyl single release in my book!
(I wanna make the remix on the flip side though)

This has been one hell of a contest and most of the music made here has been in styles lying close to my heart. Everyone has done a great job and it's been extremely har decing what to vote for.

Been away for a while. Still listening but got a bit bored with my own style, so decided to take a back seat and do a bit of studying. Here are my votes and feedback...

Halfwastedlove - Olikana

Cute disco? Poppy track. But felt like it was just beginning. Is this a finished track? Sometimes making music I get half way through a thing and can't break out of a 4 or 8 bar loop. Is that what happened here? I wanted it to be longer and I wanted something different to happen. Short-changed :[

BWWd - Suspense

Something late 80s early 90s to this. Reminded me of Falco's "Der Kommissar" or Corey Hart's "I Wear My Sunglasses at Night". :) Dunno why. The breathing felt very ... Germanic. This was like a journey down memory lane - to an alternate experience in the 80s I never had. So for me, this was almost melancholic. But it was also very well done and very tightly produced.

24.59pm and all is well - Tattiemannie

Okay, now someone is really having a play and taking a risk here. I like this. I love anything with a formant filter (if that's what it is) something that sounds like the computer is trying to vocalise / communicate. I also like how one can't really pick a "key" for this. Not successfully - as you're playing very roughly in a key and then flipping all about the place with it - but in an interesting way. So much so that maybe this would sound a bit pedestrian if you hadn't? I loved the playfulness. Nice how you finished it off in a kind of traditional way.

Yeager - Strangled by Strings

Strong beginning with that baseline. Am I right in thinking this sounds a bit like a first draft? And maybe it needs a bit more work to tighten it up a bit? I do think that the key / phrasal change at about 1.40 was a good move. Then it started to get up a bit of "pluck" and follow through a bit. And it seemed to bring in an emotional ... "thing" to it. Once you got into the rhythm, it began to "talk" and have life of its own. Maybe each phrase was a few bars too long? This sometimes grabbed me by the collar and brought me in but I don't think, for me, for the most part it really held my complete "emotional" attention. More "toyed" with my feelings from time to time :[

Mr Blitz - Belyrus

Always like to hear Mr Blitz. You go off on your "pony ride" there sometimes and it always makes me smile. You also like these fuzzy and mildly annoying high-frequency sounds. Something tells me that out of 100 of your major experimental pieces, ONE will be a massive hit and possibly start a whole movement forward in the history of human music-making. For the most part though, you're willing (unlike most of us) to take a real risk, and so will always remain at the Avant-Garde of modern music. Love how this ended.

Look Ma, No Ensoniqs - K-Bee

Funky. Late 80s - early 90s (maybe this is the synth). This is interesting, but I reckon with that very 80s electronic drum 9th eone going "dooooo" once every bar, it might have held together a bit better. But there were some nice tuney bits in this which, weirdly, felt like "solos" (when in fact everything we're doing is a solo of sorts). Liked the quiet bit at the end, but it seemed to truncate there?

The Future is Digital - monopoli

Another funky piece, although I was wanting this one to break out a bit earlier. I liked the second "tune" but wondered if there wasn't enough variation in this whole piece. It's confident enough - just maybe a bit repetitive in places. maybe some variation in the main drum / bass loops. I liked the outro bit.

Deja Vu - Steplton

Ok. It must be funk week. This is VERY tight and pretty funky. I like the keychanges - something very 60s about this. And the timing was impeccable. Very nicely produced. I never felt that anything went on too long in this piece. When you hear a piece like this - in a competition revolving around what could be boring loop-based music - to actually want a loop to return is a rare thing. And that's how I felt with this. Nice work!

Mary's Prayer - Beatsoul

Nice bits in this. I wonder whether the beat isn't too relentless. i'd like to have ehard just the syth at the beginning - maybe with a pad. There's a sanre drum throughout this that I felt could be dropped. Nice to bring in the bellish sound over the bass synth. But I think this had a foot in both camps. It wasn't traditional enough in terms of timing - or quite experimental enough. I kinda liked it at times but thought it was always just missing the point. I can feel the tune benath it, but think it's a fe srafts short presently. Could have gone longer at the end.

Respiration - New Kids On The Block

Okay. Very intriguing beginning. Very alien. Nice diversion from the 80s / 90s funky feel of this synth. But I think this became a bit annoying (not in a good way as some music can) when the high synth came in around 1.40. I loved its relentless banging on though. Really challenging and at times scary. like someone being forced to do something. Creating quite a bit of anxiety I'll have to say. Not for the faint-hearted. I liked the xylophonic culmination in this. It fianlly came together in the end, then? :)

Running - Mulperi

Whoa. And he was dragged kicking and screaming right back to the ice-skating rink! I liked this - as tingly as it was. And those trumpets. Kinda felt like the B-side of Xanadu or something. Nice timing and it defnitely had a great, up-lifting feel. Easily the most danceable piece - and that's gotta be worth something. A great tuen I never heard on the rink. Good stuf.

Deja Vu - 8

Forgot to add my synth suggestion:
Sixth Month June from Elektrostudio (The polish developer)

There might be more versions of this synth though. I have the first one released.
