One of the big things I like that Cubase has that S1 doesn't are the track folders and the different freezing options. Cubase may be clunky but it can also be very clean. I do under stand opening up various windows to edit midi notes and what not is not a nice as the all in one work space but you get used to it. I work very fast in Cubase. I could probably work well in S1 also once it gets some of those features I would be missing.

How good are the included instruments (i don't see any good screenshot on their site) and the Midi ?
If 3d party plugins are not allowed, is it mostly good for audio editing, or also for some quick & dirty but "serious" midi duties ?
And, in that cheap version, are the mastering fx (or, well, the Eq, limiter, comp) good enough to be used as a mastering host ?

Go here:
http://www.presonus.com/products/Softwa ... twareId=11
Then click "Plugins/Content" in the list of choices arcoss the top of the description box.
Then you can choose each plugin individually and see a screenshot.

The installers are stand alone for the application afaik. Any "bundled" instruments or content has to be separately installed so... yes... you can just not ever download those things as far as I know.Shifrin wrote:Don't suppose anyone knows if the installer for this allows you to opt out of installing the NI/EZdrummer stuff?! Shif.
When you register, the optional downloads for that stuff will be listed in "My Software" so... just ignore them... NI and EZD anyway, some of the other stuff you'll need if you want to use/demo the PreSonus instruments and factory content.

is it "vanilla, brad & butter" plugins, or are they studio-grade / pro quality ?

It depends on which plugs you're talking about exactly. EQ's and comps are really good imo, chorus not so much, Room Reverb is nice, delays are really good, so... it depends... but mostly really good imo.sinkmusic wrote:is it "vanilla, brad & butter" plugins, or are they studio-grade / pro quality ?
Pro EQ is the only EQ I use with it, love the spectrum display. I use RComp for vocals and bus compression as a preference first but for many other sources I use the PreSonus comps. I use the PreSonus Binaural Pan more than I use Waves S1 Imager, sounds really good to me, even very, very wide... but you'll have to make your own mind up about whether they're "Pro Quality" or not.
I think they are mostly but I obviously can't make that determination for you... if you demoed and thought they all sucked I'd have to respect your opinion on that.

Ok, thank you Lawrence.
I know it's up to me, as a happy Reaper user and vst nerd, i'm mostly trying to tell myself "nah, i don't need another Daw and any new plugin"
.
My connection is slow, but i'm downloading the demo.
Meanwhile, can it be used as an audio editor ?
And is it "better" ( = mainly designed) for recording external gear, audio/midi composition/production, or post-produciotn ?
Could anyone tell which are their strenghts (despite the much praised worf=kflow) ?

i must say im really surprised how good the included effects are in this, and so far i really enjoy this.
i already know that i will be upgrading this to the pro version, not because theres alot of features that i miss, thats not in this version.
but mainly because of the mastering thing
i make my stuff in renoise, and so far i have arranged and mastered in ableton live intro, but now i am almost certain that i wont be using live intro much more
also really like the included synthits soo easy to control, granted its not a "massive"" contender, but it is really good

WHen do people learn that a 20USD (while the deal is on!) product is NOT aimed at hundreds-o-dollar mastering tools?sinkmusic wrote: And, in that cheap version, are the mastering fx (or, well, the Eq, limiter, comp) good enough to be used as a mastering host ?

Well, and again only imo, that word covers so many things about using hosts it's hard to not include it. I mean, ease of recording midi or audio is "workflow"... and a strength imo so I'm not sure how you disconnect the two things since, technically speaking, all work kinda falls into "workflow".sinkmusic wrote:Could anyone tell which are their strenghts (despite the much praised worf=kflow) ?
Like most, it has strengths and comparatively speaking along side some other more mature hosts, some weaknesses.
If I had to pick one single "strength" for me it would probably be the mixer. I hardly ever maximize or vertically extend it. Navigating around while mixing is just so logical for me it's silly, jumping from bus to FX to channel, hiding, grouping, showing, bussing, whatever.
It's probably the #1 reason Cubase annoys me so much now...

For you Studio One "insiders" what do this means in regards to Version 2 (hopefully with track folders and freeze)? What is your take on reading the tea leaves... is version 2 coming sooner or later?
