Just thought I'd follow up since I've seen a few other similar posts since I originally started this thread... I went ahead and bought the described system, an HP dm4t, and so far it seems to be very comparable to my desktop. Didn't really spend any time with it as delivered but after a fresh Win7/64 install it seems to be running very well with no issues. Without the wireless card enabled the little dpc latency checker tool shows avg around 70 microsecs and max just over 100. With the wireless it spikes to about 500 when it scans (or whatever it's doing).
Performance seems to be similar to my desktop for medium sized projects of around 25 tracks with a 3 to 5 vsti's and lots of vst effects (and no latency to my ears). I'm using Sonar so the fact that it appears to do a lot of work in it's primary thread probably helps there since the desktop has 4 real cores and the laptop 2 HT cores. I'm also assuming more/faster memory is helping as well. All up so far the dm4t is looking pretty damn good for a 4.4 lb portable solution....
