As I've been asked about a free version - well give me some sound reasons to do one. Put your reasons in the comments in here

I have never had a problem with people charging money for their efforts, and I've never had a problem with people donating their time and effort to the public as a gesture of good will. Especially when the pricing is very low and reasonable. Who would make a synth on their own for $20-50?

I've given away all my own musical creations (Reaktor, Live, sound banks, patches, compositions, etc.), but I don't need anything. It feels good to be generous - and it's a trait not found very often today (along with gratitude).

Anyone who is going to use your tools and make money from it should at least make a donation. It would encourage you to do more designs.

Because your free versions of Protoplasm and STS got me to buy your whole catalog at that time. I can't be the only one who did that, can I? :hihi:

thanks for your elaborate answer. Actually the free version will be along the Pro version. But of course the free version will not have all the benefits of the Pro version e.g. less voices (3 instead of 12), no MIDI Learn, no VST automation labels, no Lazy buttons, less patches (not the three additional banks, maybe a selection as 2nd bank, but just maybe) etc.

Well, because you love us...Seriously the Swamp synths are among my most utilized instruments. ALSO, if I didn't suck and if I ever got any recognition of my music you would be the first one on the list for a bobbackwards "celebrity endorsement."

How about maintaining one free synth over the years, and have its developemnt
hours linked to sales of your other instruments, keep a chart on the website, a poll for
feature requests, and a repository for newly donated presets/soundfonts, and demo songs?

Very cool! What are you thinking of charging for it? 'Cause, honestly, that's one of my big criteria for whether there should be a free version.

ETA: Okay, looked at the web site. Honestly, I don't think you have to worry about a free version. Maybe a demo version that fades for a few seconds every minute or somethin', and/or is missing the presets like the beta. But the price is certainly right, and I'll be happy to buy it (before the end of the month -- money's a touch tight right now). The sounds are fantastic and useful, and the GUI is very nice indeed.

Hi HG,

Just went to buy ultra swamp but it's not listed in the shop :( I'm on an iPad, maybe that's the issue.

Recently bought Altair. Reminded me of a combination of the BBC Spectrophonics Radio workshop sounds (a big Dr. who fan) and some of your presets took me back to Tangerine Dream's early sounds. Your sounds were so beautiful and unique.

I've actually been playing around with your free synths for ages, but these latest ones are so much better in so many ways. Buying them was a natural move forward after "using" (non-commercially and mostly just for fun) pretty much all your other synths.

I think the free synth idea is great because it ;
a) is good for humanity to donate effort
b) encourages a fan base (like me) that you may not even been aware of and
c) gets people into the habit of seeing and using your free versions in their VSTi list.

I guess you can only be asking for a few reasons.
1) maybe you haven't sold many synths in the past or
2) you feel a bit short-changed in that people may have been having fun at your expense.

In the case of 1) I suspect that many of your early synths (if my experience as a beginner musician is anything to go by) were very busy soundscapewise. In deed many of your presets were amazing for me to listen to without having to open another VST or indeed even play another note in yours! The music was almost finished just by switching an HG Fortune VST on. I like these latest ones because they allow me to bed in more of my own ideas (instead of just drifting off in yours)..

In the case of 2) ... I've had so much fun with your free synths since my Father died (3yrs ago) and I "took up music" that you have been such a large part of the cathartic evolution after his death. I used to play your synths (only 2 years ago) and let them just run in the background while my Mum and I would talk about Dad.

You don't see these things happen. You just make a synth and we hear it.

There's more to what you are doing than you even know HG. Keep doing it! Please :)

Thanks for your comment and esp. this last sentence is quite important as this kind of lack of public feedback keeps me somewhat like driving in the dark if you know what I mean. It would be more visible if more were talking about it and share their experiences.

The new Swamp has some fine sounds and abilities, still have to explore more
of Plutonia, and Alphatron. Can't even say the name 'Alphatron' out loud, without wanting to call in sick, for the day :( (Entering survival coma in 5 seconds....

When will Plutonia be in the shop? Did it get rolled into a newer project?
or did Dimitri steal it for his private collection? :hihi:
