use an ad hoc network
What's that?
Point to point I think. Creates a network on the computer to connect the iOS device to it. It's fairly easy on the Mac and recommended for WiFi MIDI.

Can you do it on Windows 7 easily?

Looks so, check PM before we derail this topic :)

Regarding Alesis IO Dock, I'm sure you can do the same using a dongle similar to the Apple Camera Connection kit. Maybe some smart hardware company looks over here and tries to offer something like that.

Unless Apple can come up with a total replacement for the whole iTunes bottleneck, PC users are going to find other phones, players and tablets much easier to use for basic tasks. I am personally completely sick of iTunes on PC and will never buy another Apple device if I have to use it again.

What I'd like to see on any of these devices (especially Android devices, where it will no doubt appear first) is to be able to use the device as a PC monitor, and to be able to use the device for controlling whole vst soft devices and communicate with Windows 7. I suspect we'll see dual-N Wi-Fi touch-screen monitors first, then "smart" touch-monitors (tablets) with this capability.

With iOS 5 to be released next month, Apple will offer a feature called 'PC Free' that makes iOS devices not dependent of iTunes on a Mac/PC for sync, etc.
