Personally I think there's something to sticking to a platform and making it as rock solid as possible on that platform, but with most people being platform religious it does take away a portion of a developers market. Cool to see the interest from the Windows users here, I'm always glad to be wrong if it means more cash (=development and increased interest in DP from MOTU) flowing towards a product I like.

Don't know if I mentioned that DP Mac is AU only, wonder if MOTU thought about this? or if the Mac and PC versions are going to be incompatible when it comes to plug ins?

Plus I'm curious as to how draconian they may be about cross platform licenses?

Lots of questions, and answers might not be forthcoming until DP8 is released sometime in spring. Lol! right now my Live and Logic licenses are both v8! Might end up with 888!

That's why I didn't mention the ReNoise license!

Until I get the $ together for a roll your own PC I'll be on DP 7 anyway. No sense in upgrading to a new version when the laptop is almost 5 years old.

Wow. DP on Windows now? I guess MOTU might have been struggling with MAC sales competing with Apple and a cheaper Logic, Mainstage e.t.c Maybe they had to move to Windows to widen their target market.

you forgot mas, and surprisingly, some big devs like izotope always have a mas version.

so we can pretty much take it as fact project with mas effects will open on either, and i have a feeling we might start seeing mas plugins on windows now, in the event DP on BOTH platforms does not start supporting vst.
supporting vst both mac and pc is the smart thing for them to do though.

I am pretty sure they will include VST support, at leats on PC (how could they not to?). And if they inclue VST support in Mac too, that leaves Logic as the only AU only platform in Mac (do I hear a Requiem for AU here?).

Apple started off in OSX with audio as a huge priority, with Core MIDI and Audio no need for third party drivers for many devices. Plus AU and inter application MIDI built right in, which also works to network MIDI over ethernet etc. Then they pretty much haven't updated AU for anything but 64 bit really, VST 3 has passed it up. Logic keeps getting dropped in price, and there are rumors that the Mac Pros are on their way out. Apple may not be getting rid of them, but they haven't denied the rumors, so that's got to be tough on MOTU etc.
DP is a desktop DAW, it shines on fast machines, so if Apple decides that the Pro line is out and if you want to do serious work get a Mac Mini server farm etc. then I don't blame MOTU. What Apple should have done years ago IMO is allowed people to use OSX on PC's, not licensed to third party manufacturers, but allow people to roll their own PC with OSX on it legally and easily.

Well if Apple had kept up their advantage, in the beginning there were some plusses for AU, ask Urs heckman about that. We wouldn't have U-He if AU spec hadn't been so well laid out for Urs.

It makes total sense to have both AU and VST on the Mac side and VST on the Windows side. Some people are NAMM might be able to help with whether or not that's the case. Again if Apple ever freaking updated AU it's been a solid platform for me. Don't any of you wonder why Stienberg always have VST 3 or whatever compatibility and the rest of the DAWS have to wade through their code to get it running.

At least AU specs are well published and documented for hosts, too bad Microsoft and Apple can't get together and really nail a plug in format that works for all hosts without some caveat. For us end users though VST is solid enough I guess.

Regarding the documentation, I've heard complaints from developers, so, that may not be exactly as well documented as you pretend. And it looks pretty much as an abandoned spec, as is the MIDI manager in OS X. Apple seems to don't are about serious computers anymore, rather ther ixxx stuff.
So, if I were a developer, depending on a serious Pro platform, I would be concerned about my future.
