Hmm, might give this one a go...

Damn none of those examples are less than 3 minutes!!!!

After following the competitions for many years, it is time to partake, I think.

Give me an excuse to try out my two new synths in Cubase.

Thanks for sharing, that's brilliant.
Yes, Mr. Wuolio has a unique gift. The video is mesmerizing. I do share some concerns about trying to be hypnotic with a 3 minute time limit.

I may just try for what is necessary to be hypnotic, then edit to 3 minutes and post two versions, one for contest, one for full hypnosis and chance getting the boot.

Perhaps these bits of music could be considered slightly different examples of what might fit within this theme:

From Arvo Part's "Tabula Rasa"

From Allan Petterson's "Symphony #7"

From Bartok's "Music for strings, percussion and celesta"

Ustad Alla Rakha.

If you've downloaded Interferon's entry, please delete it and wait for a version without copyrighted material in it to be (re)submitted. I've removed the links and PM'd him about this.

Ooo, nice theme. Hope I get time to knock something together for it.

Hey, D.M., is this a new development?
10 - Every submission has to be tagged with:
c) origin of loops and samples, if they're not free of copyright (this includes CreativeCommons material; please read and follow the license of the samples and loops you use); naming the origin of copyright free loops is also encouraged, but not mandatory
I took this rule to mean that samples were allowed so long as attributed. But asking people to tag their samples just so they can be asked to remove them seems odd and a bit convoluted. I'd have thought one benefit of requiring attribution was that these things are transparent, and voters can then apply their own DQ if they so choose. Perhaps that's legally naive of me.

Not the end of the world either way, but we've had some very creative sampling here over the years.

The wording in the contest rules might need clarifying (that rule as I understood and intended it means licensed copyrighted samples, i.e. samples you're legally entitled to use), but the KVR rules are pretty clear on copyrighted material. As with the Stevie Wonder samples last month, that it seems okay to me doesn't make it legal, and if it isn't legal it isn't allowed at KVR, so it can't really be in the contest.

It could well be that I'm legally naive on this, and if someone can show me so I'll happily relax the rule, but as a general guideline, if you'd have to license the sample to release the piece commercially, you should probably not use it here (unless you license it for this purpose).

One of those times when copyright law trumps common sense. There's a pretty big gulf in my mind between creative use of a David Lynch sample and, as KVR puts it, posting 'pirated sample content', but I don't know the law well enough to argue the case. Ah well. Thanks anyway for clarifying, D.H.

I understood rule 10 in the way Barnadine wrote, but I realize I misunderstood it.

I apologize publicly for the inconvenience, and I will upload a version without those samples soon.

Sorry again, wasn't my intention to create any issue!

Thanks for understanding, Interferon.

To anyone who will need to redownload when the new version's up, I offer my apologies for the inconvenience too.

It was just a misunderstanding, and the rule needed clarification. I've added a line to it that does that (normally I wouldn't touch the rules midcontest, but since it's just making clear something I thought was already clear it seemed okay to do so; should anyone disagree, please holler).

Mister Natural, glad to hear things are going well.

Barnadine, I hope you get something together for this one too. Also, I listened to a couple of your FAWM songs the other night. Some very good stuff, "Blue Crayon" and "Breadcrumbs" especially.

OK. I'm in :)
Think I got the idea right - hope so :P
It wasn't me! (well, actually, it probably was) - apparently no longer an 'elderly', now a 'senior'! Is that promotion?

A few soundbites used in a noncommercial, low-profile intarwebs contest smacks of fair use...

Some might argue there are vendors using the contest to promote their commercial wares... I would imagine. I bet that would earn a lawyer a few bob.
