seagate 1TB internal HD

In general, the drives are pretty good, but the industry has been reeling from a particular failure of Seagate Barracuda 1 TB drives. I believe it's confined to the "Moose" drives (codename of the firmware of affected drives). These drives have an extremely high failure rate. So high that "we" (a system maker I work for now) watch systems containing these drives carefully (they report status daily), and replace them on customers' systems proactively when we see the recoverable failure rate start to rise (we'd just replace them all, but it would be a huge $ hit).

I'm sure newer ones don't have this problem, but I wouldn't want to put a Moose drive in my system.

Er, why doesn't best buy allow a way to check your cart before having to give up a shit load of info? ridiculous. Anyways, saved 10 bucks........better than nothing.

I bought the same drive last week I am not even in AHCI mode and it's crazy fast. I am using it for back up storage and my system drive on a partition and the difference is very nice. I keep my audio on a seperate smaller drive though as 2 TB is a lot of info to lose at once.

So far I am loving it.

If I was to buy the 2 TB model that Hibidy is referring to, then I should then be pretty safe as this is specific to the 1TB models correct?

Yes, only the 1 TB drives (with the Moose firmware) were affected. And there have been no problems with the 500 GB or 2 TB drives at all.

Anyway, yippee, HDDs are almost reasonably priced again!
$50-$60/TB doesnt seem too outrageous at this point. Although, the stack of 1TB Toshibas I got for half that a year ago may beg to differ.
And it seems like its been years since I actually ordered a drive. Ive been trawling CraigsList to get the HTPC its fix...

Seagates have consistently been very good to me. I still have an old repurposed C: Seagate from years ago that has not shown any signs of problems. Of course, none of the 'bargain' Toshibas has had any issues either...

I mentioned this pissing me off too (maybe it was a different thread?). Our BB is so close there was no need to fuss though, it was a simple matter of a quick painless drive so I saw this one and thought it was a bargain.

Weird about all that jazz about the 1TB, glad I didn't get that.

Snagged it. $99 2TB(about $108 after tax), hope it performs well.

The last spinning disk drive I bought was 500GB and it cost about $89.

It's kinda noisy but I have the case sides off (this case SUCKS!). I haven't had the time to do any real transferring so certainly not able to speak of speed. But I got it at the roseville best buy while they were having the memorial day sale so not sure what the price will be from here on out. I just went in a bought it. 2 TB 64mb cache is pretty decent for 99 bones.

First off, sorry if I took over your thread.


I formatted my 2TB barracuda last night and transferred 462 gigs of data. Took a little less than 2 hours for the transfer to complete.

My board is SATA II and I got around 65 megs per second while transferring from one SATA II drive to the 2TB barracuda. Good enough for me and about the speed I expected based on past experience.

The drive is relatively quiet to me even with my side wall off. I do have 3 x 24cm fans on my case though which definitely adds some noise and may be masking the hard drive noises. I could still slightly hear the 'grind' of this drive while doing the large transfer and I think it will mostly be gone once the side wall is put back on.

This is mostly my gaming machine but this will also be my new "DAW" and I don't care a ton about noise since I mostly just dabble with soft synths and direct line in for my guitar.

Anyway, I just wanted to follow up with my first impressions. Hopefully it will last a few years. I am shopping for an external drive to use for off site back up of the barracuda. That is pretty much the limit to my back up solution beside a smaller 160gig external that I will continue using as redundant back up for pics and some family videos.
