Actually I was looking into a used JP-8000 also. I can't make up my mind, as I also want a Sub Phatty. I should buy a lotto ticket.

Just in case I get a Sub Phatty and there's not much $$ left over, there is always Hive for that huge supersaw type of sound.

Novation Mini-/Ultranova would also be something to look into. IMO, there's many better soft synth options than the Gaia or the Ultranova though.

It's just that I have lots of softsynths already, and would just like some form of hardware again. It would be great if it could double as a MIDI controller as well. The only thing with older synths like the JP-8000 is you take the risk of it failing in some way, and having to get it worked on soon after buying it. With a new synth, it shouldn't have issues, at least not for a few years anyway.

I will check out the Ultranova, thanks

@Adam:
Knowing that the Roland supersaw in your synth is better than the Roland supersaw in their latest product, must make you feel very proud. :)

Actually it can be had for a quite low price now at Thomann: http://www.thomann.de/de/novation_ultranova.htm About 170 € less than when i last looked...

If you want some hardware, then I would suggest to get something that's not available in the software realm. As in, proper analog, for example.

I am really leaning towards the Sub Phatty. I always wanted a Moog, and might finally get one. :) The Sub 37 is a bit out of reach $$-wise, but the Sub-Phatty looks/sounds great, and the editor/librarian would be cool to have.

One thing I like about the GAIA is that each oscillator has it's own filter, but as far as I can tell, the Ultranova mixes them all together first, then it goes to the filter. That's the only thing I'd like changed, if that's true.
I like just about everything else about the Ultranova from the videos I've watched.

I played both. Sub 37 is so much sexier overall (plus more memory for patches, plus sequencer). Totally worth saving up for! :tu:

Forget hardware and get U-He Diva instead. It has analog oscillator emulations (including Moog) + JP8000/8080 emulated oscillator with supersaw.

I have the Diva demo version, and it is great, but still an emulation. Even if I got a Sub-Phatty/37/whatever... I might still get Diva, who knows. Hive is great mainly for the supersaw stuff. But I do want a real analog synth.

Ask Urs how many analog synths he has

Before i sold my Virus TI desktop this year i made some samples of the Hypersaw with different detune amounts and am using those in my Blofeld. Already got some nice results with that. Have also used the samples in PPG Wave 3.V which usually gives nice results with most samples loaded with it (while it is more like a "Lo-Fi" sampler).

Besides that i got a few softsynths with a dedicated Supersaw/Hypersaw oscillator like e.g. Diva and Electra 2.1(FWIW i still got JP6K from Adam too but have not used it for a while...).

I had also tried to use samples of teh JP-8000 Supersaw in Diva with the Blofeld but somehow liked the results from the Virus Hypersaw sample more. Anyway the Roland Supersaw seems to sound better in a dedicated emulation like Diva opposing to samples. There seems to be something really special about this.

I am a Roland fan but must agree that their VA line has been down the hill since JP8000. The SH-201, The SH-32 module and GAIA are nothing but vague shadows of the JP. And owning the JD-Xi I can tell that the Integra sound engine doesn't make it either, though it is good for other things. Fortunately I still got my JP with the one and only real time calculated classic supersaw osc.
Only problem is I really don't like supersaw leads, so I use it for all other than that. But spicing a deep bass sound up with a supersaw wave instead of a plain saw can also yield interesting results; when you want something "fat" on the JP8000, it delivers.

Indeed its emulation, but people barely can recognise its not a real thing. So it doesnt matter if its emulation really :)

alot, but im pretty sure they are mainly for a research purpose ;)

I have virus ti, its a digital in a box, but its collecting dust, vst is just way more flexible and sounds as good as hardware.

I have many plugins gathering virtual dust, as I am just waiting to get real analog.
