Rapture won't install on OS-X Lion

Rapture and Dimension Pro are completely, utterly incompatible with the Lion OS and there is *nothing* that will get them working on a Lion system.

This is because both synths use Rosetta, and Apple dropped support for Rosetta with Lion.

Rosetta is archaic anyway and no current, modern synths should be built around it. I'd guess we will never see a Rapture and Dimension Pro that run on Mac's from this point forward, unless Cakewalk gets really ambitious about re-writing the programs...:cough: :cough:

Same thing with Cubase's native synths 'Embracer' and 'Monologue' -- they both use Rosetta as well.

Have you even read this thread? The installers are incompatible. I've already helped a few people get Rapture and Dimension Pro working fine on OS X Lion.

Wrong. A portion of the installers use a PowerPC based app. Which then is run by Apple's Rosetta if you have it installed (apps are not 'built around Rosetta'). The actual Rapture and Dimension Pro plug-ins are Universal Binary, and in no way use Rosetta.

Not trying to be harsh. I'm really just trying to help anyone who may have got stuck on Lion, and to make sure everyone has the correct info on the issue. Rapture is my baby, well more accurately René's baby, but we both worked very hard on it, and I hate to see someone in the situation where they own it and can't use it.

Thanks Chad - so once installed how do you register it though? It seems it's the place where the registration is supposed to be saved in PPC OS-X no longer exists

The registration window seemed to not appear with Rapture 1.2.2. Seems like that behavior was removed. The Rapture 1.2.2 installer required Rapture 1.2.1 to be installed, (and 1.2.1 required had the registration window) So they must have figured if you are able to install Rapture 1.2.2 you have already registered 1.2.1.

Chad helped me to get Rapture to work on my imac with Lion installed and it works, even the third party soundsets, flawlessly now.
i'm so happy about it for two reasons: i can use Rapture on my imac too and i don't have to bounce old projects before to get them to work on my imac.

Thanks for reiterating that. To be clear, if Rapture/DimPro didn't work on Intel Mac, then there would be no "workaround" as such. Clearly, the synths themselves run fine and dandy on Lion, and it's the installation that's hosed.... which is what really makes me in no particular order.

Or maybe I should just give them a summary:

yeah, imagine, you have licenses for several pc only products from Cakewalk, you can't use on a mac. neither can you sell them nor your account to somebody else after migrating to mac from pc. so they're totally useless now. then you have one synth, that works on mac, but the installer doesn't work on the most recent os.

The non-sale price of each is $200 and $250, respectively, and both are advertised as PC & Mac compatible. I'd say that sounds like a pro-level bit of kit, no?

Dim Pro was in Sonar 8, the last upgrade, i bought. i don't know, if there was a mac installer too and if i was allowed to use it on mac anyway, because it was part of Sonar, which is pc only. it's not bad, but also not essential. Rapture is a howling and roaring beast though. Yodelz

My understanding is that the bundled version does not include the Mac installer. I bought the full version several years ago. I agree, not essential, but useful for some things... like the occasional detuned bass track. I'll be here all week, folks. Try the veal, and don't forget to tip your waitress.

BTW, if you google "rapture lion install", this thread is the first hit, and the second hit is a Youtube How-To video. Let's just say that if I described the method recommended in the Youtube video I'd get summarily banned from KVR.

So let's tally this up, just because I want to keep this rant going... User X, call him "Bob", owns a shiny new Mac and bought this great virtual synth called Rapture [on sale this month for $99, BTW] that everybody on homedawgearsynthsrecording.com is raving about. Bob tries to install Rapture on his shiny Mac, finds he can't, so immediately "Goes To The Cloud" in search of tips, suggestions, workarounds. Bob fires up a browser, goes to www.google.com, and types in "rapture lion install". The first link is a kvraudio.com thread that basically says, in so many words: you cannot install Rapture on your shiny Mac. The second link is a youtube.com video that describes a "workaround" that, again, I will not summarize here for reasons stated previously.

You can't make this stuff up.

It uses Rosetta purely for the authentication when installing, once installed it's Intel.

If you install under 10.6 then upgrade it works. Otherwise you have to manually copy a working install and prefs over to get it to work.

Given that Mountain Lion is only a few months away it annoys me that there are so many plugs that have issues with Lion still, never mind PPC chips which Apple said they were phasing out back in 2005.

No worries at all Chad, obviously I was confused about what was being discussed, and I'm totally *happy* to discover how completely wrong I was! So thank you for the correction. I will check out your steps tonight and see if I can get the synths running OK. So again, thanks, and sorry for my jumping to those big conclusions without understanding the situation! Happy to be corrected!

edit: it looks like the instructions are just being sent via PM? can you post them here or PM me? I own both Rapture and Dimension Pro and would love to get them running again...

I'm more scared about devs DROPPING support for SNOW leopard not lion LOL!

SL 10.6.8 is the best OSX for me.

This. I tried Lion, really did but it's not a patch on SL which really does 'just work'

Was a pain to have to flatten my DAW and re-install it from scratch with SL but worth it having everything working properly again.

Hopefully 10.8 will be to 10.7 what 10.6 was to 10.5

Any users running Lion should update to 10.7.4. Silk smooth now.

Also, can't wait to try 10.8
