Cubase 5 - Drag and drop inserts between tracks and projects?

No way! Wow. That might make life easier (if you still use Cubase inserts)!

never occurred to me until I could in VE Pro.

I still do, for things where I change automation using the GUI of plugs, writing during playback.

also I use VE Pro Audio Input as an insert in Cubase. That way you can send from one instance of VEP to another, via the DAW host.

it works with third party stuff too or did I misunderstood what you said above?....and of course option drag makes a copy.... to transfer to another project you can always save each insert chain as a preset, and when you open the other project you can reload that preset on that track....although I suspect it may also put the volume level and pan of the source track not just the plugins.

That's right. I often wish there was a way to just copy inserts, or sends, etc. And you really should be able to copy settings from an active project to an inactive one (you can drag & drop audio, MIDI, etc - why not effects?), but I guess that's been addressed with Cubase 6.5.

I didn't see anyone make the distinction, third-party or not. I don't use Cubase's own plugins at this point.

I copied a lot of things in the mixer I didn't need to!

You can drag n drop with any plugin, third-party or otherwise.

It seems problematic if the instrument rack is different, would it not need to be the same rack?

Sorry, I was talking strictly about dragging and dropping effects/VSTi between mixer slots in a single, active, Cubase 5 project. And you can't do it in the Instrument Rack.

I'm curious why someone would need to do this so often as to make a crucial host decision (that's non-judgmental, just curious)?

I'm no pro, so it's probably not good technique, but the kind of music I produce (metal) is consistent in level, dynamic, and tone throughout an entire album, so I like to drag and drop the settings from one project to the next because, frankly, they work equally as well. I could do presets, but that is extremely annoying when I can do the work faster in Sonar.

I might try the demo of CB 6.5 and see if I'm more comfortable with that. Thank you all for the assistance, though.

Cool. I hear ya. If you have a lot of consistency, then I would suggest using the copy/paste feature (either ctrl+C/V or with the copy/paste icon on the lower far-left of the mixer). You can copy one or as many tracks as you like, as long as the targets are compatible types.

no, I have that from what you said; but 'this is supported in Cubase 6' follows three listed criteria in the OP, which included two active projects such as in Sonar, without sorting it.

I wouldn't want to, I expect complications and possible instability; I use 'save as template' if I want the same template, it's quite simple. Also saving channel sets and chennel strips, and o' course copy/paste.
