I'm sure we'll see freeware sounding this good at least on a component level (e.g. certain filter or osc type). The difference between freeware and payware is ihmo mostly in complexity, format support (32/64 bit, VST, AU, RTAS, RE...), included soundsets/presets, and a lot of other details.

Simple answer: not enough truly great free stuff to replace all payware. Not yet, anyway.

Short answer :

There are no equivalent free plugins that can do what Le Masque Delay or the ChoriX can do. Btw there are simply no equivalent payware plugs as well.

There are some good free plugs. They just dont cover all the possibilities.

Bullcrap. Those free porn on the internet are the equivalent of warez. They are uploaded without permission, and the one that's uploaded by the official company, mostly it's of low quality and duration (like a demo of payed plugin).

The free stuff doesn't usually have as many knobs and the MILFs (Moog I'd like free) are dirtier .

What can I say? After 27 years, I have yet to become "experienced"

Hearing the difference is one thing...saying it's "better" is entirely another

Yes! Basically, if someone specifically loves the sound of DIVA, there are few alternatives and none of them are free, but if they love the sound of Synth Edit synths, the world is their oyster!

Okay, im perhaps not the right person to answer this but lets try anyway.
(i have a shipload of non-free plugins simply because i won them!

The Plugins i have actually bought can be counted on 3 hands.
I also have many fine freeware plugins. They all have their own nice purpose.

Why pay for plugins:

• To support releases of even better plugins in the future.
• To support the family of developers.
• Quality sound designers sometimes work for money

There is no proof that high price always guarantees quality.

There are no guarantees that free plugins have poor quality.

Thats all i can say on this topic. And whatever you do, enjoy what you do.

I always used freeware, and will always use. I don't see the point in paying for a plugin when there's so much great free options. But it's just me. And I never used any pirated software, even for trying purposes.

However... Many plugins have weird EULA and there's some silly rules about "making money from them". I think that's one of the reasons most comercial artists never say if they use some freeware synth/fx (besides companies endorsement, of course).

Not that I'll sell my tracks or so, but I'd feel unconfortable (and very angry) if someone offers me a millionaire contract and I couldn't sell him my tracks because the author of the synth I've used in that arppegiating part doesn't allow me to do it.

How many of those "experienced" ones are even out there in the general population ?
