Well, if you only tried the presets and never tweaked the instrument yourself of course you'd never be able to really judge the sound of a synth anyway - that would be like judging the qualities of a car-engine just from having a ride as the co-driver - and that'd be really silly - so if you make comments regarding the sound of a synth, I must assume you used it yourself...ttoz wrote:no, that would be the presets.jens wrote:

That would be true if all sound designers where of equal skills, but it's not.ttoz wrote:here we go again.

Presets are a judging point of any synth..
I will never ever change my stance on this.
Sometimes small companies don't bother with presets (or have bad tastes) and the presets sound like crap.
I'm not saying this is the case with Kubik, though

Kubik is a wavetable synthesizer, so naturally people expect sounds which remind one of the PPG, Microwave and Fizmo - and I think Kubik's sound-designers succeeded in delivering such sounds. But if you have an open mind, you will also already find sounds which go way beyond that in the factory set.
When I did my demo-tracks for Kubik, I attempted to show a lot of what Kubik is capable of and I think it is by far not all 'cold and digital'. I also didn't want to go too far away from the factory set and so I only minorly tweaked factory sounds when creating these demo-songs. What I personally do not like very much though is bog-standard tarnce/dance sounds, and neither did the others involved, I guess - so you won?t find them in any of the demo-songs nor in the factory-set - however that doesn't neccessarily mean Kubik wouldn't be capable of doing some of such sounds, superwave perhaps aside. I managed to get some great, fat Moog-basses, etc. out of it for example.

Don't terribly care for some of the 'experimental' presets, but at least they show what's possible in Kubik (and what's possible just amazes me).
Some really nice pads (Conrardy, et al.) though, among others (with almost 1000 presets, lots to look, err, listen through).

I managed to find an old email from 2009 announcing the Mac version for a £10 crossgrade fee. The question is, is it worth going for this still given its age, will it run on Lion?

a note: if you're using Kubik to try and get fat, warm, moogish stuff... erm... how do I put this, You are Doing It Wrong. It is so obviously not for that Think more like some of the Waldorf stuff, or the Wavestation, or maybe even Fizmo. Sometimes - gasp - you might not need warm-fat-moogy-analog-saturated-thick-etc. Although, it can do a passable fat bass sound, or nice round pad, if you really can't find something more appropriate for the task.
if noone's tried on lion, I suppose I could load it on my McBook pro, just updated to lion though. haven't mountain lioned it yet, cause i can read my email fine with lion.
