Seems like there is a difference between apps working directly with the photos and videos, and importing them.
I have several photo editing apps, and none of them requires location to be enabled.

The only reason seems to preserve the meta data when importing photo, I don't think that the app does anything with it.
And as location is part of the meta data, ios ask permission to use it, which is freaking out most people, for little or no reason.

It's worth it (especially since it's free) even with the Location Information. I've used the Avid version for a couple of months now and I like it. Much more of a video NLE than iMovie was.

While we are on the movie subject, what are other cool apps for video creation / special fx ?

I have these:

Fluid FX: Interface is a bit painfull, but you can get some cool stuff with the right picture once you understand the params.
Too bad it can't use a video as input.

Flixel: Use a mask to define what's video and what's stilll, good fun and easy to use.

DoodleCam: Nice sketching fx

Any others? Looking mainly at quick results, not spending five years on an animation.

Unfortunately the Apple API that allows us to enumerate photos and videos on the iPad requires Location Services to be turned on to work properly. We don't use Location Services for any other purpose (and we certainly wish it wasn't required).

If we simply used the built-in image picker from Apple, we could avoid this, but then we would have the slow video selection, and no ability to categorize photos/videos into events, albums, and faces.

There is a workaround in Pinnacle Studio (though it's a bit of work). If you use a program like iExplorer, you can simply directly copy media to the "UserPhotos", "UserVideos" and "UserAudio" folders within the "Documents" folder. When you rebuild the library, these will be enumerated regardless of Location Services settings.

iMovie?

Compared to this one iMovie is pretty basic, only advantage is that it runs on iphone too.

Btw, is there a way to paste audio directly to the ipads music library without using a pc/mac ?

Aslo, has anyone got the video addon for auria ? Does it work well ?

Intro Designer is cool for creating nice intros with moving CG backgrounds and voice overs.

Tiltshift - very nice for creating the effect of the same name

1st Video - one of the best and most full featured video editing apps you can buy. It is dead serious about editing video - complete with multiple video tracks, audio tracks, video effects and transitions.

Trailer Voice - cool app for creating pro trailers. Limited, but really fun to use.

Reel Director - Photo and video editing app - uses a storyboard format. Nice for editing video but simplistic.

InfiniFX - Use photoshop-like filters on your videos (non-realtime)

VideoPix - Make screengrabs/caps from videos

Luminance - Use photoshop-like filters on your videos (realtime)

VidRhythm - Hot damn is this thing FUNNY! Create amazing videos with music from little clips you record with your camera. This is a MUST TRY! I love it.

Of them all, iMovie and 1st Video are the most serious. Have not tried out Pinnacle Studio yet, but it seems very cool and I did grab it for free, so I will be trying it out eventually.

It's funny because a bunch of years ago I was into the video stuff and I wanted to add my own music which brought me to the vst world (was cubase vst 4.5 or something) and finally forgot about video and plunged totally in the music stuff. It's funny that it's kvr that reminds me about video and with current tools and technology it sounds more fun than it used to be.

You are not going to replace Sony Vegas Pro, Final Cut Pro or Edius with the iPad. Further, Apple's silly and strangling restrictions makes it almost IMPOSSIBLE to enjoy any kind of editing because it's so unbelievably difficult to import and export files or add more hard drive space/memory - you know you'll run out eventually no matter how good you are at organization and backup.

Given all of that, it is FUN to move video around, use your fingers for cuts, transitions and crossfading and all the other stuff that responsive touch screens allow.

The best of all worlds would be a 15 inch ipad-like touch screen (with its low weight and form factor) that wirelessly allowed you to use your Apple and PC software the way you can use the iPad - and still be able to use your keyboard and mouse. It would be even cooler if the pad had enough available and expandable memory to offload said project for editing at the coffee shop and then sync it back up when you return home. Now THAT would be amazing!

I know you can do a tiny bit of that with the iPad using Air Display, but it's not the same really. It's a slow and clunky wifi screen addition. I've not found it useful at all.

The location thing is needed to access the photo lib, it's an ios thing.

This looks like a really cool app, much better than imovie that I just got for 5 bucks

Funny that other apps doesnt need this location thing to access photos and videos.

Many photo and video apps, including iMovie and iPhoto require location info in order to access to library. It's just the way it is.
