Tony, I know from your posts and tunes on Patchman that you are a great player. The weak thing here is the mix.

I don't like JR at all. the horns are too mid-rangey, and are lost in the mix. They just clutter up the song. As I listened to jr, I kept thinking, why don't they mix these horns like Good Day Sunshine, Gotta Get You Into My Life, or one of those great tunes off Revolver? (OK, maybe not Yellow Submarine!)

In TO they seemed to have heard my wishes, because the horns were brighter and more blatty...the eq was much better, to my taste.

As to leaving the horns out...well, the arrangement is a little busy. It's kind of like punk band meets BST. Oh, and it's all kinda loud, eh? :)

thanks madcow and beatgirl and all, its fascinating stuff to me.

tijuana brass and bst are influences for sure, i dont think i was purposely thinking about either during all this but thats influences for ya. herb alpert was the first concert i saw as i kid and bst was the concert i most recently saw, not counting coldplay w/thier lack of horns and i got in free to that one.

so nicely done there doctor!

and maybe the trick is to be sober enough to do the articulation editing in chris heins, send in the mix , and then quick get drunk enough to enjoy what they send back.

but thats moot cause i dont drink and dont use chris heins, i gotta think a lot of the glissando stuff would be hard to pull off. maybe i need to take a look at that again.

i keep thinking that i want to sound like "my" sound and if they want another sound thats absolutely fine and they should find someone that sounds like what they want rather than process me into that, especially in this case where the 2 are this far apart and it really is quite the artistic difference.

i always push the idea of checking out the local high schools and colleges because you have lots of fresh players with tons of enthusiasm and theyre gonna be happier with what they get back because they havent got the expectations and arent used to any certain kind of results, whereas im used to having things come back either the same or a bit better sounding (to me).

im certainly trying not to be a jerk, i think id be more of a jerk to take the gig away from the guys who genuinely sound like that, and im a jerk to myself if i do this and hate it every time i hear it.

oh i forgot to comment on "got to get you into my life", did you see mccartney did that at some show with keyboard horns and they started and i was like "oh oh im not gonna like this"

but then i remembered the horn parts in that song are tongued on every note, no slurs, perfect for a keyboard to do.

and i think they sampled the original of course so there was no problem at all.

but try that on "all you need is love" and its not gonna be so pretty.
