I really use this one a lot because you can split apart the left and right delay times even though they are still synced, which gives sounds lots of space.

As with reverbs, I look after flavour in a Delay, so one versatile processor does not do it for me. Still, Kjaerhus Classic Delay (Free) has 3 selectable modes and sounds good. Works fine jBridged.

I mainly use:

PSP Echo
NF BT Tempo Delay, Echoes
TAL Dub 2 and 3 (seldom)

Multitap: PSP 608, Ubhik D

Freaky: Valhalla UberMod, AD Discord 3

I also have Rob Papen Delay, but find it quite sterile, maybe it's just me not being friends with the GUI (which is beautiful, by the way).

"Simple" character delay: PSP Echo and Nomad Echoes (love the oilcan on this one).

Sound design/over the top crazy shit: Ohmboyz, Übermod, Reflex Pro 2. That last one is a true dark horse, capable of some amazing textures and way more than a delay. You really need to check it out.

TAL Delay 2 & RetroDelay

if i want to go crazy i use modular energyXT for example to split up the signal into 3 frequency bands and work them differenty or i use RetroDelay in reverse and TAL parallel

im looking for one which covers all conventional things + maybe can do some crazy stuff if i learned delay further.

what is the difference between free and paid delay plugins? i mean are there any soundchanges when you just use a normal delay ping pong setting 1/4 for example?

Thanks to all the people who mentioned Le Masque

Since version 1.01, Le Masque can also operate like your regular and conventional go to delay (ie without the masks, before this version you had to create a single mask covering the whole grid to achieve the same results). We added a toggle for that. So just your regular delay, but with odf filters This only probably makes a difference.

Version 1.01 also added the feedback loop and some other features.

And version 1.5, wich will be released soon, will add even more features.

So I'd say that with Le Masque you can now do some totally crazy things, wich have always been the case, but also use it as a very simple delay.

My "go to" delays are AD Ricochet and AD DubStation ... I also like (and use) E-phonic Tape Delay and GSi GS-201 Tape Delay (I guess I like tape delays). For crazy stuff MeldaProduction MRhythmizer is great (way more than just a delay.

Tape Delay vsts are designed to emulate old fashioned tape based delay units. They are less "clean" than a digital delay, and tend to add some modulation to the sound of the delay. Try the E-phonic Tape Delay ... it's free.

Waves SuperTap, picked up supercheap, is easy to use, tiny CPU hit and to me sounds great.

GUI makes perfect sense too.

That's too bad, it really is nice. With respect to the OPs quest for an easily understandable delay, it probably wasn't the best suggestion anyway. The interface is the only thing I don't much like about it (too small and fiddly), and it does require wrapping your head around the signal chain and the many parameters in order to get anywhere - although there are a ton of useful and original presets included.
