Poor old FXPansion Geist and Tremor.

I had Guru, and now have Geist and Tremor. However, when I upgraded to Arturia's V Collection 3, I got Spark VDM with it, and just found it so easy, intuitive and quick to use that I started to use it more and more. As well as this, I have poor and worsening eyesight and I find Geist in particular very hard on my eyes (I had to get rid of Reason for same reason, no pun intended).

As a result, I've just taken delivery of a SparkLE a couple of days ago, and TBH, I think it's going to be a very long time before Geist gets fired up again.

Tremor. Well, when I get to install it I'll let you know. I've had it over six months and still haven't got it up and running. I got it going in a VM but my cpu sucked out at a kick drum.

It's ok. One day I'll get a proper computer. I look forward to it.

Look, the Fxpansion offerings are a bit tasty on the cpu, but they sound amazing and the interfaces are beautiful, very simple...

I suspect my Waldorf Attack can do 70 percent of what Tremor can do. It's the other 30 percent I am interested in. Computers will keep running faster. I use software that is a few years old on my main production machine, generally. Everything flies.


Everyone knows the latest Fxpansion stuff is a bit cpu hungry. You are not the first to realise this. I won't ever sell anything I got from them. In fact, I just keep buying more stuff. Excellent company. Amazing plugins.

I owned Guru for a while, but sold it because it just didn't jive with my workflow. Then I owned Geist for a while and ending up selling it for the same reason. I wanted to like them, but they just didn't work the way that my brain does. I own Tremor, BFD2, Eco, Synth Squad, Etch, and Maul, and they make perfect sense to me - I barely needed to crack open the manual for any of them (well, except for Cypher and Fusor). But, Guru/Geist just don't seem to be intuitive to me and they have too many features that I don't use, not enough of what I do. I still think they're great instruments, just not for me.

Well sometimes people buy things because of the possibilities, then in a while they realize they are really not using 90% of it's features, so it's better to sell it and use a free sampler or something

Just conjecture but It probably accounts for some of it. Similar with Tremor, programming raw drums is one thing, then you have to process and layer and so on, it's easier and often better sounding to use samples.

That last part is how I feel about Tremor. It has quite a nice set of tools for shaping drums, BUT... it really is easier just using samples.

I haven't offered mine up for sale *yet* but I don' really see reason for keeping it, other than there's that large transfer fee.

I've used a number of synth based drum machine plugins and really the only one that I've wanted to keep or use is SonicCharge's MicroTonic.

Geist, I was interested in, but I couldn't justify the purchase as I can do what I need directly in Ableton. Again, great product, but no need to duplicate workflows at an added expense (again, I'm talking about my own workflow).

If the Fxpansion gurus are watching this thread, I want them to add Midi out for both Tremor and Geist. If i could choose between just one it would be tremor.

They've had a couple of those big sales where they sell their major products for $99 so people are probably dumping impulse buys.

I just sold my Geist/Tremor last week, mostly for this reason. It's really easy to convince yourself that you will get a ton of mileage out of something once you spend money on it, but it just didn't happen for me.

For all the good I got out of Geist, I can do the exact same thing with Battery (i.e. I never used the sequencer and built-in sampling). I thought I would use the crap out of the on-board sequencer, but I don't know... it just didn't happen.

I don't think it's anything crazy, like a coordinated mass-dumping of FXPansion stuff. These products are just way more complex than a lot of people need, and a lot of people (like me) don't realize that until they have had a few weeks to really play with them.

But I know myself well--this is why I try to only buy things that are on sale, and only from vendors who allow license transfers (even if it requires paying a fee, as is the case here).

I downloaded the demo of Geist awhile ago... and it failed my 15 minute test. If I can't start using something within 15 minutes it's too complicated/complex... Could be I'm getting old (yes) and I'm impatient, but it was too much the kitchen sink kind of thing. Like Guru to some extent. Now, I love Nerve, which was created by the guy who did Guru but it's almost minimalist compared to Geist. And I use Microtonic quite a lot with Nerve... Some of these plugins I love the idea, but the actual use seems to be another thing.

It's fantastic.... if you use the onboard sequencer. And actually, it's still very very good if you don't. But really if you're not using the onboard sequencer you would do much better with Battery. If there was a mod matrix for geist I would love it. But there's not, and the automation functions don't even work! After I map a couple of parameters, one will just randomly not let me automate it anymore. I did a bug report a long time ago but they didn't seem to do anything about it. And by the way, this is something I've reproduced in 3 DAWs, on Mac os and Win 7.

I love the way you can layer hits in geist, it's the best in that regard, but IMO the onboard sequencer is pretty clumsy once it's time to arrange a song, I much prefer battery.

I will admit I never loved Geist as much as Guru, don't know why. I used both for years and they are great products but Geist definitely has more than I need. I have never used more than 1 engine, I'd rarely use the built in FX, I'd just use the multi outs and use my own FX. I'd chop up samples from time to time, so there is definitely at least 90% of Geist that I don't use.

I did switch to Ableton Live when 9 came out and just got into the Drum Racks 2 weeks ago, man they are impressive. At the start I thought they were basic sample pads with not much extra but after digging deeper into them I released you can do so much with them. It's all I'm using since and I feel I'm flowing a lot faster wit them. I thought about selling my Geist too if all I'm gonna use is Ableton Drum Racks but have a few years of Logic projects that use it so I think I will hold on to it for now.

As for Tremor, I keep saying that I'll sit down and learn it someday but it just keeps getting pushed to the bottom of my list. I think it is too complex for what I do.

I use Amber quite a bit and Strobe from time to time, have Maul too but never turns out to be my first choice for some reason, but it is a really good plugin though.

a lot of people seem to be using Geist with another DAW, and understandably seeing duplicated functionality. I tend to see Geist and Maschine as standalone apps with their own workflow, every time ive tried to use them in a DAW i always get really annoyed with the routing and trying to make 2 sequencers work together...

Poise is much more suited to being in a DAW as it has no sequencer.

It's an immensely powerful and flexible instrument.
