Of course, by the end of the 90s everyone signed a pact which reduced d+b to basically sped up techno, and I think that's a crying shame. Techno is great as it is and doesn't need to be at 178 bpm and be called d+b. Never understood that. But everyone was like "Oh, listen to this drum beat... *one bar loop repeating, snares on 2 + 4* ... it's far more sensible... oohh, don't mix polyrhythms... it's a mess.... blah blah blah". There goes the punk element that made it so interesting to me in the beginning
plz help me understand: what is DnB ?

The thing about early d+b/jungle that I liked is that there was interplay between parts, especially the rhythm section and the rest of the track, and between various elements of the rhythm section. This seemed to fly in the face of the traditions of techno and other dance-related genres, and add a sort of live, rough edge to the music.

What I liked about Timeless, and also Reprazent's New Forms, was how jazzy they both were. That was a breath of fresh air really and lifted both albums musically above the mainstream of the time. Timeless was one of the best albums of the 90's for me.

2013 DnB : tempo upper than 160 (but less than 200, it is not thunderdome here)
Shady rest of breakbeat, most usual (90 % of prods) is Kick, Snare, wait a little, kick, then quickly snare ! -> K...|S...|..K.|S...
Heavy drums, distorded basslines and fews melodics... And don't call it dubstep on steroids or I'll break your neck ! Dubstep is basically sleepy drum n bass halve tempo by 2.
Theses times I like Receptor, Xilent, Fourward, and a few others.

Lucky no-one told Squarepusher or Venetian Snares about it, eh?Sendy wrote:Of course, by the end of the 90s everyone signed a pact which reduced d+b to basically sped up techno, and I think that's a crying shame.

Indeed. And lucky these people never listened to their critics' cries of "tone it down mate!" as well. Imagine if every dance-influenced tune was a sensible little floor filler. Talk about boringGamma-UT wrote:Lucky no-one told Squarepusher or Venetian Snares about it, eh?Sendy wrote:Of course, by the end of the 90s everyone signed a pact which reduced d+b to basically sped up techno, and I think that's a crying shame.

thanks fellas; DnB is prolly not for me
the reason I ask is I'm working on a tune that's kinda drum-based with fat bass but only runs at 112bpm
I like where the tune is going but don't know what to categorize it as . . .
peace

Possibly Big Beat (remember that?!) or Nu Breaks (we are the breaks that say "NU!"!). Or if it's not so breakbeat based but more drum machines... bass-heavy techno? *shrug*Mister Natural wrote:thanks fellas; DnB is prolly not for me

What is drum and bass? It was mainly an attempt to evade the Criminal Justice Bill of 1994, which outlawed 'repetitive beats' in the UK. Your typical party crew had no choice but to start shuffling the beats around to keep it all legal.
Lesson learned: if you *really* want to stimulate innovation in the arts, the best thing you can do as a matter of government policy is attempt to annihilate it completely. Subsidies will *never* work.

k - dire ear is my music.
everybody remembers jungle, but there was another genre as popular at the time. i'm not gonna look for ishkur's site, and i forget the name.. "two step" iirc. kicks on 1 and 6, 160bpm. often less fluff and pretense than jungle. i don't remember the discretisations for tech step, hard step and the many resultant "steps". prolly all mean different things now.
