Soniccharge Microtonic 64bit (+more) Out!

it does look great, but tbh, microtonic is dated. sure, if you want that 'microtonic' sound then its great, nothing better. but its sorta, too little/too late. microtonic is going on 11 years old and in that time, it really hasn't grown that much. price/feature wise its just not worth it anymore. not for the price it sells for anyway.

64bit though is pretty awesome, but magnus does seem more about putting out ever newer products then actually taking something to completion. im sure its what you have to do though if your a one man show. theres no denying that hes a great and talented developer.

Just my two cents:
Its just the same as saying, well my 1176 or my 808 isn't that good anymore, cause its dated. If the sound is good, its good. In my opinion its one of the best drummachines out there in the virtual world that isn't a clone.

Whuzz exciting when a non-sample-based plugin becomes 64bit? Don't get it - but always willing to learn in order to overcome my ignorance.

because it doesn't shake up your performance when loaded in a x64 bit host.
(that must be not true for all but for some hosts)
because some hosts do not provide native 32 bit plugin bridges.
because some people just don't like bridging,
obviously the cpu works better when using a x64 plugin in a x64 host same is true for a 32 bit host.
a 32 bit plugin works better in a 32 bit host.

I am on the fence about this. I already have a few drum synthesizers, but this is a very good sounding drum synth. I am kind of curious about aliasing issues in the synth engine since this is a older plugin. Anyone run into any issues? It probably won't bug me much, but i am curious.

I love Microtonic because it doesn't try to sound like anything other than a drum synth, and it does that very, very well.

Used MT since it was 1st released...it just gets tighter, leaner, faster, meaner and more efficient imho, nudge, shift, randomise, fantastic levels of morphing control, preview grooves/hits from library synced in realtime before committing, transpose and rework to perfection or experimental destruction without barely a glitch, run it in pitch mode and you have a strong synth, run 2 or more instances, there's enough there to probably keep a dance club going all night....shit load of constant refinement under the hood and has all been free IIRC since V1.This frisky 10 year old drum machines level of control with a minimum of clicks/keystrokes, (try shift clicking on the drop downs (Permut 8 does this too) will instantly carry out the last command) midi cc control/automation make it a very capable live performance instrument, automate the mutes and solos, apply some functions or scripts and get great variations/improvisations on build ups and breakdowns...I use the Pika scripts a lot (which you can download a pile of free from Soniccharge) which add another crap load of functionality and fun factor or write your own.It's a jamming delight.

I agree it has a sound but what a sound, it can punch you in the gut or shred your aural senses, style wise....amazing percussive glitch or fat fuzzy warm lazy beats that can hypnotise like Kaa, the list goes on, drag midi patterns straight to DAW, bounce your groove to audio in a flash, drive anything else with its midi out, it'll even update controllers, its a very formidable all rounder.The new skin may be very subtle at first I guess because we are so used to what MT has looked like since its incept date (a lot of work has gone into achieving that level of balance but appreciate that its not for all) but it really does make a big difference I find after a while with the extra space and sharpness of the GUI, reduced eye strain, smoother easier general navigation, a good workspace and just the right dimensions for me.

Patternarium's beat generations keep getting refined and has had a major overhaul, copy and paste direct straight into MT or save direct to a folder in a few clicks, then use a Pika script to suck out all the single drum hits from the endless patterns for instant massive library, it will now even remember every different folder that you put the hits/drum patches in allocated to your MT tracks for really fast mix and matching, they will also preview on their own individual outs, dive into the matrix editor and wreak havoc!


Wishlist....personally what I would like to see in MT4 if it was to happen without any compromises on its efficiency and stability and giving the dev a nightmare would be tempo division/timings for each track and higher quantisations, 256th's for me personally, of course you can trigger it externally anyway, maybe addition of song construction.....it does everything so well why not, it would more or less then be self contained.Ultimately though I would love to see Magnus make a dedicated bass synth to go with MT, side chainable, envelope follower, beat groove locking ala Trillian/Stylus/Omni for some interesting control between the two of them, so Synplant is great and V2 is on the map, perhaps some integration specifically with MT is a possibility for this sort of combined use...who knows.

My humble advice to anyone on this potent micro powerhouse, get to know it inside out, it just keeps delivering.MT is like a Clydesdale horse, dependable, strong, stable and just keeps going no matter how hard you hammer it.The proof is in the pudding and you get a lot of pudding made from the best beef suet...oh I forgot its also 64bit
