FM8 is devouring CPU. There's nothing about it that spells "CPU friendly" :)

For spacey pads and alien sounds I'd look at HG Fortune's synths. They're very good for atmospheric music and lots of them are free (you can't get more alien than Altair).

AALTO is also one particular sounding synth that's capable of lots of sonic oddities. Same goes for RP's BLADE.

But tbh Sylenth is a monster synth that's capable of pretty much any type of sound and there are tons and tons of presets that compensate any lacking of the stock banks. Dig a bit around and maybe you'll find the type of sounds you're after without buying a new synth.

Well, you know better than me so I will look into FM8. Thanks. :)

Well, I do know that I came across Aalto and am interested in that one, but even on their site it says that it's pretty CPU intensive.

I have 4 gigs. DDR2, though. :(
whyterabbyt wrote:Look to older plugins, like Rhino, and the Korg stuff. Something modular like KarmaFX or VazModular, too, maybe, if you wanted to get in-depth with synthesis and customise stuff exactly to your needs.
I will look into those. Thanks. :)

Well, I don't plan to get a bunch of synths, just a few different ones from each other should be fine for me. :)

Uh-oh. Who to believe between you and the one who says different? :hihi:

Yeah, space/alien sounds would be great and I will look into these. Thanks. :)

Really? I mean, I've went through the presets and it makes quite a few different sounds, but they all seem kinda in the same genre-ish style(if that makes sense).

You're saying it can make a lot of trippy, alien, atmospheric, etc. sounds?

well maybe, but aalto CM is not polyphonic it's mono so prob not as near as much cpu maybe with a couple patches you could get up there.Linplug alphaCM is super low Curve 2 cm has like 814 online patches I think so it's worth it anyway here's the link for that voucher if you wanna try out all the cm synths free http://bedroomproducersblog.com/2013/05 ... upon-code/

mileages always vary, so you'll only know how it works on your own system if you demo it and see...

Hey kvruzer666,

you could give the following freebie a try (at the bottom page):

Kassiopeia! 2.0:

Classic Phase Distortion synth like the CasioCZ series. One of the best (if not THE BEST) virtual PD synths imho. There is no need for filters because everything can be achieved by sweeping through the oscillators (IIRC 5 standard waveforms plus 3 resonance sweeps - both can be combined) via 16stage envelopes. This one is a real beast. If you need further informations google for Andrew Schlesinger who wrote a book called "An Insider's Guide to Casio Cz Synthesizers".

Check the presets for a first impression. PD is great for everything but if you like pads think about it this way:

- one 16 stage envelope controls the pitch of osc 1 (DCO1)
- another one controls the pitch of osc 2 (DCO2)
- a third one sweeps through your osc 1 combo (waveform 1 & 2) (DCW1)
- a fourth one does the same with the osc 2 combo (DCW2)

And both last enveleopes control the amp section of osc 1 and osc 2 (DCA1&DCA2). Now enable keyboard tracking (!!! oh I love it on PD synths). And then the effects. And the lfo's. And try different osc routing options...

Cheers,
Sebastian

True. Maybe I will demo it.

That's odd. Even on my old AMD dual-core it performed rather well and now on my new system it shows 0% CPU used, literally. I could probably stack up about 50-70 instances, if I would be into such things.(Everyone knows what I'm about to do now... :hihi:)

Just for giggles (and because I'm obviously bored)

25 instances, all playing some 4 note chord, preset "Addictive Synth" which uses 7 built-in effects and 2 voice unison for about roughly 20-25% CPU used.

Ghehe, nice. :D

Yeah, both FM8 and Absynth are light on CPU.

Native Instruments FM8 ( Almost unoticeable CPU stress on my old machine ), Korg Legacy Collectgion ( Ms-20, Polysix, Monopoly ), and Imposcar I.

All three with low cpu and enough sound quality to still be usable in any project.

here's an exemple of a whole track in FM8 that took just around 30% cpu on my antique 9650 PC

Wow. :o Which CPU do you have?

i5-3570k. It's not even the latest and greatest you could get, but it's a giant leap for me. :) But as Lotuzia mentioned, FM8 runs pretty well on low specs already.

Yea the Korg plugins.
They are really the lightest on cpu, and have great variety.
I think the M1, with the Polysix and M20 includes the Legacy Cell (really good combination, for $150usd will get you much more than most.
