If choices are Podium Free, Studio one free or Mulab free what would you choose then? Why?

Post

Podium Free definitely. Unlimited tracks, loads VSTs, no limitation there as well, beautiful, customizable...The only limitations are it will use only one core of the CPU and the 64 bit mixing engine will be disabled. A fully functional DAW basically.

As you said it's for a 11 to 12 years old kid, I'd recommend MuLab Free because it's easy to use and 4 tracks are enough for the start (and synths, samplers & effects are already included!).

MuLab is quite easy to learn. The free version can have more than four tracks however a 'soft noise' will play in the background when you have more than the four track limit, which may not necessarily be a problem if you are just using it to teach or demonstrate music production to kids.

Studio One free simply rocks. It's workflow is very intuitive, there are unlimited audio and instrument (MIDI) tracks. It comes with a Rompler type instrument which can also play sf2 format sound-fonts and some very usable audio effects.

The only drawbacks are 1) there is no support for third party VST plugins and 2) the interface while being simple, usable and uncluttered might not be to everyone's taste

I liked it so much that I bought the full Pro version of Studio One, having tried the free version first.

from personal experience i would recommend LMMS, its free and is more or less a clone of FL Studio
