Can a VST trigger recording in a DAW?

Coincidentally, I was just using the plugin version of Bidule to do this in Renoise last night; controlling the Renoise transport controls from a Bidule drum sequencer. Bidule is excellent for this sort of thing, as well as exceptionally useful for many other purposes.

For what it's worth, I've also used Bidule plugin instances in a similar fashion to control AudioMulch.
