PPG v.3 from Waldorf. What is your opinion?

Maybe you know my question: Is it possible to import Wavetables from the app from Wolfgang Palm (Wavegenerator) to the PPG 3.0 ?

not a great emulation imo .
it only emulates accurately the wavetable aspects. the filter sounds plasticky and fake (with resonance and tight modulation especially), and no surprise as it's not a 0dff.

The filter sounds great to me (also with the Drive feature) and with "typical" PPG Wave sounds you usually don't need high amounts of resonance.

BTW did you ever use a real PPG Wave 2 to know if it's a great emulation or not?
Did you ever play the emulation for a longer time and made your own sounds (including sounds with no or low resonance)?
PPG Wave 3.V is no analog synth, it's more "hybrid" or digital so don't expect it to sound like a Minimoog.

If we talk about aliasing, PPG 3.V uses an emulation (!!) of the aliasing in a real Wave 2.2/2.3 (depending on the "True PPG" mode)

Even if it would be no perfect emulation i love it for what it is and i know that Wolfgang Palm (PPG founder) who participated at development, new wavetables and also factory presets does like it too.

AFAIK not but as i have no iPad i have not tested myself.

Most of Wolfgang's new development are independent from Waldorf.

Agreed. Had found this too.

Just checked it and could get some nice Resonant sweeps too.
Not forget to use filter keytrack (MOD menu) and/or filter drive.

In "2.V" True PPG mode the fiter sounds closer to the old 2.V version.
In the 2.2 and 2.3 mode you also get aliasing which could make it sound quite special.


I still plan to do another bank for PPG Wave 3.V, this time without using any samples (a lot of them included in the first two banks).

No doubt good for you But not everybody has access to the upgrade path.

Everybody that doesn't have the previous version can get it super cheap and still upgrade for less than the cost of going straight for PPG V3.

One other thing: I think this is the easiest synth to work with. On the surface not too many options, but it is very easy to get sounds from simple and quickly usable to pretty crazy and still usable. You have to learn your wavetables and some other options and you can get amazing sounds every time with simple turn of o knob.

Not to forget that you could use the filter envelope for Osc1 and ENV 3 for Osc2 (Sub-Osc") for scanning through the wavetable.
For that use "ENV3" in "Sub-Waves" at the DIGI" menu.

well, it would be if they'd actually decided to not give it a UI that didnt do its damnedest to emulate all the worst facets of a crappy 1980s LCD style layout. Its barely an improvement over the authentic-PPG style UI on Herman Seib's PPG and at least he gets a pass because its more less a port, not just an emulation. But the V3, a supposedly modern rewrite... sheesh.

yes but if the cutoff is fully open then it ain't being modulated , so 0dff ain't gonna play any significant role there.(as the smudged plastiocky shaping is not gonna be apparent)

no , not even seen one in person.
but i know what an analog filter sounds like though. and especially a curtis filter.
you can't attempt at doing any 24db properly without the 0dff approach, you just gonna fail. i think it's been shown time again in the past years that the old dsp filters are redundant and fundamentally flawed.

Only the original PPG Wave 2 used CEM filters. v2.2 and v2.3 used SSM2044.

And, I think there are non-0dff filters that can sound really great. I think even Urs is going to confirm you that. PPG v.3 has one of those great sounding non-0dff filters.
