Ahhhh, now we're talking. :) I remember the Unisys server that took up a full rack and a half of space (about 60U or so, as I recall?) that was only 64 CPU's and 96 PCI-X slots from around 2002 that cost about 1.1 million? Man, we've come a long ways. :) $2600 sounds so cheap in comparison.

For quad socket you would need 4600 series, not 2600 series... And you would have to run Win Server, since Win 7/8 only support two sockets, and it is unknown how well, if at all, DAW hosts run on Win Server, or if AISO drivers will work etc.

...And Intel likes to charge ~twice as much per CPU for the 4-socket processors, so likely at least $4-$5k PER PROCESSOR in this case. The V2 versions are not released until Q1 2014 for these... Prob a $25K system all said and done. Seems absurd, yes... But some PT systems get up in this range, so it's not completely unheard of...

but, ya, we have come a long way, definitely!

D'oh! Good catch on the processor numbering, my bad. However, I was thinking down the line of a Xeon is a server processor and was making reference to a server OS. ;) For a DAW, that would be nuts! The use case for that configuration is likely only be the upper 1% of all DAW users, if that.

so... anyone have benchmark numbers yet?

working on it we finally received 2 retail Xeons and those are working together.. dang bad microcode on the ES samples we got..
looks like those will get stuck into 2 single processor systems mine and the 2nd in command.. ah shucks I have to upgrade..

Sorry to hear about the 'forced' upgrade, Scott. If the 'speed bump' from those ES beasts is too much to handle, let us know, we have some great Xeon beast rescue centers in our area. :D

Thanks Scott. You rock!

Would be great to see 1 vs 2 active socket numbers too if possible.

Would be interesting to see if using a single socket mobo is any different than using a dual mobo with only one active socket also... Not sure why it would be... but stranger things have happened...

Any news?

we are swamped man.. we are running beyond our limits as it is.
I will see if I can bug someone
I actually thought about it this morning as well..

ok the dual Xeon board went bad on us, waiting on RMA. someone will try to get to the single system today or tomorrow

Don't rush the man. No DAW benchmarks are served until he's bored sometime next year or it's Haswell-E time. Whichever is later. ;-)
