Part 5 (Melody Generator)

Post

Thanks for doing these Chris; nice insights..! A few questions if I may:-
1. I guess you can't go backwards to 'retrieve' a liked generation (say number two but you are now at your number six generation..?); even maybe to the immediate one before current generation..?
2. So, it seems there's no way of 'storing' any results..? You would have shown this surely if there was... Is there no drag-n-drop of the MIDI to your DAW for example...? A scratchpad/notepad..?
3. What about if I wanted to keep the first (Em) part of a generation (say my fourth attempt), but still wanted to experiment with the full Em Am two bar section (I'm now up to generation number ten, say) and then combine the two... can I do that, without having to 'write it down'..? Where's the Copy-n-Paste with this Melody Generator tool...?? Have I misunderstood..?
Thanks for your attention..!

Terrific video, Chris! I'm finally able to learn what this program can do. Thanks so much!

1. Nope, can't go backwards... (EDIT - yes, you can... just UNDO... RC saves everything in the history) but it's good to maybe record the piece as a quick audio bounce, or take a screenshot, if you like something... or, do a screencast, that way all of them are saved! :)

2. You can store/save generated melodies by clicking "save" in the Inspector view... :) But after they are saved, they can't be edited/tweaked in the same way (Probabilistic rhythm, etc)

3. Not sure, maybe Attila would be better answering this question. I would assume so... :)

copy-paste is basically ALT+drag, or the "ghost" variation which is I believe CTRL+ALT+drag... I think...

Post

Er, ok thanks Chris... It was as I suspected

An audio bounce, screenshot or screencast..?! No thanks; that's a workflow killer right there..!

In essence, you can happily spend ten/fifteen minutes generating umpteen 'melody lines' using all the different 'variation' tools within the MG. Fine, but what I was looking for, was what you can actually do with them/how you can work with them/how can they be used, once you've found a few you like. No direct copy/paste or drag to your main composition is, to excuse a pun, a real drag... ;-)

Time for a Feature Request.

1. yes, you can go back and forth in history. You can view your changes in a list under the History tab.
2. there is MIDI drag-and-drop to a DAW (tracks: Ctrl-drag track header, composition: Ctrl-drag 'file' icon)

>But after they are saved, they can't be edited/tweaked in the same way (Probabilistic rhythm, etc)

No, they can be edited as a generator if you save it that way...

3. you press 'Z' (undo) as far as you want to go back. Select the phrase, and press 'C' (copy). Press 'Y' multiple times to return to the present state. Press 'V' to paste the old phrase. You can then split the phrases and delete the unneeded ones.

Chris helped me a lot to fine tune the melody generator, thank you, Chris! :)

Would it be useful to have 'Store current composition in history with comments' and you could provide your comments? This way you can find an earlier idea quicker in the list.

Thanks,
Attila
