Wha'ppen to Grebo?

I think Grebo was overshadowed by not just Grunge but what happened to music after Ministry and similar guitar-based "Industrial" bands. I know that is where my listening tastes moved to at the time and PWEI even signed to Interscope for Dos Dedos Mi Amigos.

re: Faith No More... I think they more than most bands drew their audience towards other weirdo music. It could be the Mike Patton thing but being a teenage fan of FNM when the Real Thing was released, seeing all the Godflesh, OLD, Young Gods etc T-Shirts that they were wearing in videos and on TV performances... led to further exploration.

I guess PWEI kind of adopted it but the press really jumped on it (they need these labels) though it seemed most bands labelled that way treated it with derision in interviews (think Steve Albini famously said that anyone calling Big Black grebo would get a kick in the balls).

Never saw it as anything to do with Madchester, more the hesitant reappearance of 'rock' (I'm thinking of bands like Crazyhead and Gaye Bikers on Acid too) after the indie rock of the 80s (Smiths etc) kind of killed it. In press terms that is, sure millions still enjoyed it without giving a hoot what the NME thought.

I think the Farm were more aligned to the Madchester scene though, or at least they were around at that time (and from Liverpool rather than Manchester).

I dunno, maybe Grebo was like a sub-scene of the Madchester scene?
