Never used it. Always used WMP. Works fine so never felt the need for an alternative.

Winamp (with whichever plugin I have installed for it) is the one thing that syncs my iPod without making me go through all kinds of intolerable bullshit. I'll be saving backup copies of the installer for future use.

MusicBee is okay for listening and organizing, and maybe some others are too, but I keep going back to my favorite whipper of llama asses.

Winamp and mIrc are the last two pieces of software I still use from the '90s. It'll be sad to see it go.

first mp3 player i had.

and the first mp3 I ever played on my state of the art 486 - Republica 'ready to go' (1996)... i couldnt believe hearing audio like that without having a cd-rom in the drive!

The only thing that made it hard work was how often I found that it didn't have codecs that I needed to play files.

Never really got into Winamp though, but I usually install VLC as it has more codecs out of the box.

I will continue to keep Winamp for the Milkdrop 3d visualization add-on, now available as OSS, using the "linein://" command --Some of the hundreds of patterns I find extraordinarily compelling - "far out, man!"

Does this also apply to the Android version? Only decent free player around there...

for Windows, i stopped using it 10 years ago or so.

I can't remember using another mp3 player than Winamp. It's with my computer since the Pentium MMX days. Fast, rock solid, easy to use, plugins, skins, straightfoward, no useless features... it was instant love, back in the day.

That's sad news for sure. But, to be honest, I'm still using the old 2.78 version, and I didn't have any plans to change it.

Exactly my thought. It could be an awesome and competitive multimedia player, if it fell into the right hands.

I'm sure there would be tons of devs and groups willing to make it rocks again!

Doubtful.

Apparently the free version was good enough for most folks which is why they never paid for the full version.

Winamp was my main media player for shoutcast. When I got an android the first thing I did was install winamp on it. I've used VLC for various things but nothing quite compares to the older versions of winamp. I find that the current interface for the computer is too overloaded a ui. While the android version is just right.

Sad news.

When I get home at night, I fire up Winamp, grab a beer, and pick a playlist.

Haven't tried anything else I liked, I've backed up my installer so I'm good to go as long as my OS runs it!

Oh well, nothing is forever..
