How "near" will that be? And will actual users be entitled to have the new versions for free? Did they commit to that?

I don't want to hijack the thread with yet another Pace/iLok debate so to be brief (and no rant)....I had a bad experience that cost me a lot of money and to this day they have not been able to provide a solution. So no more money from me going their direction.

Also, it runs in the background eating system resources. This may (or may not) be a problem for others but I need my system resources to go to my DAW.

osiris, you been here long enough to know the rants, erm...debates, about this subject.

I know. I've seen people say : I installed Pace and nothing works right after, but Pace is the owners of the ILok, correct? At least the software side of it. I had UVI on another computer which used Pace and I didn't notice any problems. Still, I see where people get upset.

I would be interested in buying it for just $50, if I knew that if I got tired of it I could at a later point transfer and sell the licence to somebody else

For the price, Retrologue is maybe a better option for analogish style synth plug, and that licence I know one can deregister and sell second-hand

No, you do not need the physical dongle to run Retrologue, the soft e-licenser is enough.

So the licence can be deregistered from the soft e-licenser and sold second hand

First, Pace has a long history of being a sh*t company in many ways. Also historically the Pace CP system has been among the worst crap like Sony rootkit, Macrovison and other horrible things that could mess up your computer, cause instabilities and compatibility problems. Sure, they have improved but even as recently as couple of months ago there were problems where some Pace stuff caused some Tone2 stuff not to work. And not to mention the big downtime from the last year.

Second, it's the overall logic that bothers me even more - basically the fundamental idea of Pace iLok is to put all the CP expenses on the paying users. You have to pay for your precious iLok extra money out of your own pocket. If your precious iLok brakes you are in for a lot of grief and have to suffer additional losses in both time and money trying to resolve the matter, and no developer nor Pace will give a flying F. What is more insulting is that they see nothing wrong in asking you even more money for their "downtime protection" that lets you use your paid for software if something with their CP brakes. What a joke! And all those outrageous license transfer fees... Pace is basically a extra punishment for paying customers.

Third, it takes control over your paid software out of your hands and ties it to arbitrary external factors. So it's an external non-core function of your software that in the case of not functioning makes your software non-functional in full. I know that many people do not encounter any problems, and good for them, but during my work I've seen plenty. Why do they sell you their "insurance" in the first place?

Dealing with CP sh*t in general is rapidly becoming a full-time chore and these practices should not be encouraged. Pace is a remnant of the old times where good software was rare and expensive. Fortunately this is not the case anymore and there are plenty of choice beside Pace-locked software.
