But despite its 'crazeee fun' image (which is much less so since the huge economic problems hit), Japan is actually reasonably conservative in terms of music choices.
A trawl through the Japanese top 20 will throw up a couple of current ubiquitous teenage staples (such as Pharrell Williams and 1D), some bubblegum pop (such as AKB48 and ARASHI) but a lot of rather sweet melodic songs, even by mid-30s male musicians (such as Kobukuro).
As such, amusement factor aside, I can't see 'death metal J-Pop' taking off hugely over here as a music style once Baby Metal's fad passes; its energetic factor is already eaten up by more typical 'J-Pop' bands, such as AKB48 and all the other triple letter pre-teen targeted dance / singing groups.

That's true. Most J-Pop seem to be as boring as Canto-Pop and Mando-Pop or even K-Pop (which is a bit better)...

Then I rather prefer Indian desi & banghra music...

Edited: nevermind my previous thought, I actually watched the video and I think i get it. It reminds me of music you might hear in anime shows which is catchy sort of.

I really like the musical talent of the players. Not sure why they need 3 girls when the vocalist is all thats really needed. This is just my opinion though.

TBH, most students in my school see them as a temporary joke (if they know them much at all).
That's not meant cruelly: the girls are choreographed very well and they manage to grab (annoy) the attention well.

So I'd probably react in the way that many Japanese would: a bit of amusement (with no doubt added nauseating 'kawaii' factor...), but don't expect this trio to last much beyond another 18 months (and 3 DVD videos, no doubt).

Funny that you mention it, because the band "Babymetal" exists since 2010 by now. And it's just as successful as various outsources from the former known "Hello! Project".


Another fun fact:
This band is not(!) distributed in Germany - so there is no copyright holder for them yet. Still, most of the videos are (once again) blocked "due to possible GEMA rights".

Pity that they only made one official album. Which hurts even more if you know the roots of this particular video (and the corresponding movie).

Indeed - and I can't see them lasting another 18 months in this guise.

And the strict ''Hello! Project'' management is just as bad as with other Japanese teen group management companies (re: AKB48 and the then 20-year-old girl who shaved her hair off for being seen with a BOY...).
Thus, we find members' contracts ripped up for being seen with a boyfriend (Mari Yaguchi, Miki Fujimoto) or having a crafty snout (Ai Kago).
This doesn't stop the endless stream of young 'talento' coming through to replace sacked members though. Nor does it diminish the authorative manner of these management agencies (or increase the quality of music...).

On the long run, of course not. But as long as it's working for them, they'll push through - for fame.

Take a look at Mini Moni and how long they held out. Or as you mentioned, AKB48 (which did change the setup through the years, but they exist since 2005!). Even with the controversy revoling around them. If everything fails, they go solo or form own projects.

To be honest, I don't see them vanish soon. Maybe the setup will change, but as long as they're popular and loved, they will continue to exist in some form.
