I kind of hope BWS will be a hit on the Linux side , I dual boot Windows 7 and whatever flavor of Linux , so be it av/linux , ubuntu or mint . Is Bitwig gonna be free or discounted for Linux users ? I know Tracktion is free on Linux ? anyone ?

AFAIK you will get one unified license that you can run on OSX, Windows or Linux, which ATM makes a lot of sense until the (commercial) VST market on Linux is getting bigger.
I also hope that Bitwig together with Tracktion will finally tip the balance so more developers will see it as a viable option...

The new open Movie from the Blender Foundation will also be done 100% Open Source this time, including the score...

As somebody who has been a Linux fan for many years, and my main net machine is Linux, all my attempts to do serious music work on Linux have failed. I'm older now than I was, my patience is much thinner and I have way less spare time to play around with things. Trying to get stuff working on Linux is a fulltime job in itself! Which leaves very little time for actually working on music/audio. Windows and Mac are supported by the big toolmakers and they – most of the time – just work.

I used to be real utopian. I had an Arch install and I got my latency down in Pure Data to a stupidly low millisecond value. I was so proud. But then I was left with loads of Pd patches to build so I could actually make some noise!

Bitwig looks great, don't get me wrong, I've been following it as much as the next guy!

TLDR – Linux is great if you have the time to put in. But inevitably it will be limiting. The best option is to have two machines, one major OS, one Linux. Treat them like hardware synths to connect up. (OSC and ReaRoute maybe?!)

All IMHO YMMV BBQ etc.
