Poll: Do you avoid to buy plugins which can't be transferred? = (NFR: not for resale)

Same here. Although sometimes you're tempted by a no brainer sale, although you don't quite 100% like the plugin/sound, or you buy an entry level version of something, and decide to upgrade to something bigger, and so you want to sell it. But i don't get buying something for 100 plus €, and selling it after a couple of weeks again, because you found out it is not for you... it better be something for me, when i decide to shell out 100€ for it.

Never sold any plugin before (only DAWs), so usually I don't care. As I buy mostly plugins in the €50 or less category, and as Compyfox already said you get like nada for used plugins, even though there's practically no wear...
I prefer vendors with a liberal resale policy though, but more important is a customer friendly copy protection.

I haven't sold a plugin yet. But it's on my radar now; I'm probably not going to be using the same plugins forever.

I tend to stay firmly in the budget end of the plugin market, so it's not such a big deal.

If I was buying more expensive plugins and suites then I'd definitely be more inclined to find out the resale policies.

Now, I know that planning for the unexpected is prudent. But on the other hand, it's hard to ignore the irony that you might just be setting the stage for failure.

Ive got a few NFR plugins and I barely use them..

One is spectrumworx because it's a buggy piece of shit on OSX in Ableton live. I love it but i f**king hate using it only to have it crash my entire DAW. I've tried working with the developers but so far I think there are some communication issues. I understand that they did not write the original code, so I imagine that it's a bitch to do bug fixes on but still I would like to have a working copy i can use without crashes in the future.

Another one is Crusher-X mac! v3 which is an amazing plugin for what it does, but I don't like the expensive updates. In all fairness since I bought it used for around $120 on the market place i can't hold too much against it because I'm always amazed at the results i get out of it when I do end up using it. So for me to get the 64bit version i have to pay another $100 something which is kind of expensive for a plugin that I only use occasionally for particular sound design applications. If the developer improved the filters and made the GUI more responsive with tempo synced modulations on some of the parameters I would be all for it. Still kudos to the guy for making one of the best granular delays out there..


Rapture is frustrating because I can't use it whatsoever. I bought it when i was on a version of OSX that supported it.. I did have information on how to get it to work on the newer OSX systems but I lost the files for that. Now that I own Zebra2 I don't really know if it's even worth resurrecting this for anything? I can't even f**king sell it which is a pain in the ass.

If someone knows a way to get this working on mavericks lemme know.


So anyways the long and short of my answer is that NO i would not have purchased these only to have them sit in storage when i could resell them and use the money towards other things I actually could use.

it doesn't really work like this. what normally happens is you never even consider it, until such point as life throws you a curveball, and suddenly you find yourself choosing between plugins and REAL necessities. after that, you tend to factor this in when possible.

it seems those that keep banging the drum for "don't be a f**king idiot, just buy what you need" argument, now spanning a few similar threads, lack the empathy for others who have experienced a situation that they have not. either that, or they are just looking for a way in which to get a superiority fix

Your point is well taken. Indeed, my calculus would probably change considerably if a zero was annexed to the purchase price of most of the software I use (i.e. Cubase, Halion and Kontakt for $5,000 each, and Geist for $2,500).

I (and many here) take for granted that the current state of technology allows for prices that I consider to be very affordable. But, unfortunately, that is not the case for many.

On the other hand, I'm old enough to remember a time when my only option was to buy the hardware versions of these things at a cost that might annex two, or even three, zeros to current software prices. And, yes, I would have definitely reconsidered if I couldn't re-sell.

using plugins as a kind of 'savings for a rainy day' is also a stupid idea and a poor excuse... but you know that.

Agree, although I will sell plugins and software when allowed if I don't want them anymore. I certainly don't buy plugins with the thought I'll sell them later.

Really? I suppose you've never sold your car, or house, etc.? Some cars have better re-sale value than the others. In my opinion all the material, including the software, are just made for use. If you don't use it or enjoy it, better re-cycle it. Making this impossible from the manufacturers side is artificial protectionism. H.

It depends.

If I can demo the plugin and I am convinced that it is the shit, then I buy it regardless of NFR. If I am not so sure whether it really kicks ass or if I cannot even demo it, then no.

Well, also the price tag is important. If it's 10 bucks I might even buy some NFR stuff without even testing. But more than 10 bucks, no.
