I do my plugin development on an 800Mhz Pentium III laptop w/ 384MB RAM. It's pretty sweet, actually. Audio production I do some on the laptop and some on a 1GHz Athlon; I also have a 3GHz P4 but haven't migrated any audio work onto it yet.

Celeron 433, 256megs, 2 6gig hard drives and a 15 inch monitor.

But that was retired a few years back (the kids use it to surf and type)

Too bad this thread didn't come up a few months ago. Up until January, I was running a 333 MHz PII (that's right, read it and weep) severely abused gateway laptop, with only 20 gigs of hard drive space, 64 megs of RAM, and a broken LCD display (damn thing couldn't keep itself upright). Now I bet some of you are wondering how I could have made music on that thing? It wasn't easy, after all when I bought Tera 1.0, I couldn't even run the bastard on my laptop (that was part of the reason for the long overdue hardware upgrade). I was using Acid Pro as a host, mostly using samples, and one or two low-demand VSTis and very few effects. Even with that, I was struggling to get anything to sound, so I had to bounce to disk EVERY time I wanted to listen to what I was making. In any case, I didn't get very much work done in this time, and it was more or less like pulling teeth when I got around to it.

But now, I'm the happy owner of a Shuttle XPC and have kicked the old laptop into the closet along with my old Packard Bell heap I keep around because I'm a total packrat for technology.

I think I've got you all beat:

Using a P2 333MHz (overclocked at 450MHz for the past 5 years), 192 MB of Ram, 6.4 GB harddrive, running Win98 (first edition). Been using it nearly every day for the past 7 years, with nary a serious hiccup.

I must laugh every time someone posts here about not having enough CPU on their 2G P4s. Big babies just don't know what they're doing. Yesterday using about five plugins at once from smartelectronix (not ambience mind, but still several of ioplong's and analog delay) with several large audio files running, with automation in Audiomulch, while recording to hard drive, and the PC didn't even skip once.

Take that.

Yep, running a PII 350 / 192MB RAM until a month ago .. motherboard finally died. Great stable machine, and ran Tracktion and the EnergyXT demo well. It was amazing how many plugins could run on it.

Ok, nevermind politics... we are here because of music.

I had the worst system just two months ago: 300 mhz Pentium II, 256 ram, generic pci soundcard, 32 mb of video... speakers? my battered aiwa soundystem´s default. Bounce to audio manouvers, crashes, crackles, etc, were VERY COMMON.

Talk about the wonders of living in a third world country.

Gladly, now im working on a 2.0 ghz, hoontech dsp pack, 512 ram, etc...

A friend of mine had some masochistic ambitions for years:

Pentium I (yes: one!!!) 120 with 32MB RAM, running Samplitude 5.x.

Can you beat this?

BTW: I don't feel comfortable anymore with my P3-650/256MB... need more power...

I'm running an AMD K6-2/400 mhz with 96 meg ram. 16 bit soundblaster CT2940. 2 harddrives: 2.5 and 1.5 gig.

I'm dreaming of someday owning a P3 laptop, maybe. The shock of a P4, or the AMD? 64-bit or the PIV-EE might be permanent.

Actually I'm upgrading to a P3 300mhz with 224 meg ram and 2 8gig harddrives. This P3 outperforms (splendidly) the AMD on some things, and is equal or better on the rest.

I'm running on a P4 1.7Ghz with a Soyo motherboard, 512megs of old single speed RAM which cripples my performance any time the CPU has to access it, a bunch of cards, hard drives, and usb devices. But this is not the bad part.

This is the bad part:
My original system was a dual boot 98SE/NT4 configuration, which has been ghosted to a new drive (my system boots from the "D" drive, not "C"), upgraded to Win2K, and had Win2K reinstalled over the top when it started getting too flaky, all without doing a clean install. It has gone through 2 motherboard upgrades and as many video, sound, etc. PCI changes. I have not done a clean install in about 5 years. This is my general purpose PC, 3D animation system, and primary music workstation. I keep Zone Alarm, Norton Antivirus, and ICQ running in the background at all times. My 300+ gigs of storage are fragmented all to hell. I would like to start fresh, but the prospect of backing up everything that needs backing up and not forgetting anything (Favorites, Outlook email, various passwords, Palm databases, etc. etc.) is too daunting a task.

Who uses the worst computer?
