I think Davens' next synth should be called 'Conundrum'
:-)
I'm tired of being insane. I'm going outsane for some fresh air.

"Somehow Cycle, additive synths, spectral synths and also some wavetable synths seem to be based on similar concepts while there could be big differences in how detailed the control of partials over time is or just how complex it is to program them from scratch."

There used to be very definitive differences in the hardware domain, but the virtual domain is a completely different animal because of the possibilities. At this point they start to blend together a little bit. The boundaries are beginning to blur.

For those who can read German, Beat magazine has a Cycle LE on the cover disk and an (indepth?) tutorial for it.

Am going to order it this weekend so maybe that can shed some light on the matters.

And yes, I bought Cycle too, because the sound is Awesome! :D

Hey, there is one thing that really annoys me: I believe Cycle is an interesting and powerful synth (at least it looks like this), but why it's developer is so non-responsive for help requests?
Just a quick example: the original poster (wagtunes) have posted two messages with Cycle-related questions on Amaranth Audio official forum (http://www.amaranthaudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=4). None of his questions were never answered. Why? Can we trust a developer who ceases to help the users?

"Never"? - he posted those questions just a few days ago, perhaps he's simply having a break? In fact I see plenty of examples of him responding to questions.

Post

Yes, he's very responsive and very helpful and very kind.

Post

I have also found Daven to be quite responsive.

Ok, never wanted to be offensive. Thanks for the info, glad to know that Cycle developer is open for it's customers!

Weird, I just found the demo in my plug in folder... I had no idea what it was or when I downloaded it... much have come out when I was too busy to open it. Seems like a very cool plug! Maybe a contender for Iris? I'm surprised Simon (aka Sampleconstruct/patchpool) isn't all over this one.

Good for you, had Pharrell and Robin been just as smart, walking off the beaten track, they may have saved themselves having to pay $7,4 million

 He said elsewhere that he didn't get the UI. I don't know when he tried it, there have been some significant tweaks and improvements in the last half year or so.

It's 'spectral' but not like Iris, more like LinPlug Spectral, only you can morph everything, like Serum (so actually it's more like Serum, lol). Morphing is done via vertice points, I don't know how Serum does it.

Be sure to download it again, it has come a long way in the last half year or so. Much more point-and-click now than initially.

The help pages are really well done too IMO:

Really fascinating synth and it sure sounds beautiful.

Just thought I'd chime in. I love Cycle, although I'm terrible at programming it. Daven is awesome, too. He even took the time to get in a Google hangout with me and walked me through some things. I have a feeling that he's just got so much on his plate that he forgets to check his forum regularly. Hopefully as his business grows, he can get some help with his forums. I wish I had the knowledge.. I'd be happy to help him.

The only thing with it is that it doesn't 'listen' to Sustain Pedal! So you cannot hold notes using Sustain Pedal. This is a big drawback for me ... :(

I posted about this on Amaranth forum but got no reply yet ... :(

If my urge to learn something new is overwhelming me, I might give it another try. Spending weeks and months with Kaleidoscope - deeply learning and exploring it - has satisfied that urge lately. Producing soundware for Cycle would seem like a lost cause though, if only a handful of disciples are actually using it.

But: how could something non-sample-based (Cycle) substitute something sample-based (Iris)?
