Yes, I've always done this to find melody if I have music written before I have lyrics. Will never publish my gibberish tracks, but they're an essential part of the process.

They always sound more "passionate" than when I force words into it. Hmmm...

Off of a game OST from a few years ago.
The vocals and lyrics were provided by vocalist Emi Evans (Emiko Rebecca Evans), a singer from England living in Tokyo... In addition to singing, Evans was asked to write her own lyrics in futuristic languages. The composers gave her preliminary versions of songs and the style they wished the language to be in, such as Scottish Gaelic or French, and she invented the words. Evans wrote songs in versions of Scottish Gaelic, Portuguese, Spanish, Italian, French, English and Japanese, and wrote "Song of the Ancients" in an entirely fictional language. She wrote that song by listening to songs in as many languages as possible and jumbling them up together. For the other languages, she tried to imagine what they would sound like after 1000 years of drifting.

He mentions that 4 minutes into this.

Remember seeing this documentary (but the full version) back in the days. Possibly my first sight of the Fairlight.

Personally I find it harder to "invent" sounds and words while composing. I tend to improvise total nonsensical lyrics to find a melody, but use real words. Sometimes that nonsense is gently sculpted into the "real" lyrics later.

Do vowels and sounds count? Or is that something else entirely?

"Yo oh yo ho" Kind of stuff.

It's a good technique to find melody and even suggest actual words. Sometimes the nonsense works out to sound like something. Sometimes you can see where your word habits lie. I have never considered recording it though. I'd be too embarrassed to listen back to it, let alone anyone else hearing it.

Only time I considered recording it was under the thinking that I would make up a language, like an alien language for scifi [insert Brunnen G fight song here]... But that's a lot of work and it's hard enough just to be productive in the first place :hihi:
